Kalyn's Kitchen Picks: Kroger CARBmaster Yogurt

If you live near a Kroger store, this is a great low-sugar yogurt!

Are you a label reader? I'm a committed label reader, and the first thing I look for on a label is how many grams of sugar the product has.  This tasty yogurt has only 3 grams of sugar in 6 ounces of yogurt (and only four total carbs.)  I've been eating this for years and it's one of those things that are always in my fridge, so I think it deserves a spot on my list of Kalyn's Kitchen Picks, where I feature food products I'd happily buy over and over.  

I do want to clarify that this product is something I love as a snack; if I'm using yogurt as a recipe ingredient I'm probably going to choose Fage 0% Fat-Free Greek Yogurt, which is another one of my picks.   The exception would be the CARBmaster vanilla flavor, which is something I've used in recipes like Red and Green Fruit Salad and Low-Sugar Double Blueberry Yogurt Parfait.  I also love to eat the vanilla flavor with a handful of fresh blueberries mixed in.

In Utah I buy this yogurt at Smith's Marketplace, but I am assuming that most Kroger stores will have it.  Of course that's not going to be much help to readers who don't live near a Kroger store, so I'm going to do something I rarely do when I'm talking about one of my picks.  If you're a reader who enjoys another brand of low-sugar or low-carb yogurt that's comparable to the sugar content of this one, please share the product name and nutritional information in the comments.  (No links to product websites please; that will just encourage spam comments.)

  5. Doris, I definitely wouldn't eat the fruit ones which have bits of fruit in the yogurt. The South Beach Book says you can introduce "yogurt, nonfat flavored, artificially flavored" for phase two, so I'd say it's probably not good for phase one even if there's no fruit in the yogurt.

  8. I LOVE this yogurt also. They sell it at Dillon's in Kansas. They have recently added new flavors - blackberry/pomegranate, cherry acai, and some others that are fabulous. I also love the vanilla. I use it to make fruit salads and also for breakfast I'll add 1/2 banana and a handful of raw oatmeal!

  11. OMG- I love this stuff!! I especially love the strawberry pomegranate, the blackberry, cheery, raspberry, strawberry banana...actually the only one I DON'T like is vanilla. They are such a great find - and so high in protein compared to regualr yogurt. I am totally addicted. I eat a couple fo them per day at work for snacks. *LOVE*

  12. The Kroger Carb Master yogurt is so thick and creamy and higher in protein. Add a few drops of almond extract to the vanilla flavor or a little lemon extract- so good. I am crazy for the Blackberry and Black Cherry flavors. Thanks for spreading the word about this low carb product.

  15. If people don't want to use the ingredients that are in this yogurt, I suggest they don't buy it, but don't leave comments here "lecturing" about what it contains. I believe in giving everyone their free will when it comes to food choices.

  16. This yogurt is by far the best on stats! Low calories, low sugar, high protein... I just can't buy any other kind when I look at their stats after finding this one!!

  18. I love this yogurt! I usually have it for dessert after dinner. I will say that originally the jello like texture kind of freaked me out, but I've found that as long as it put it in a bowl and stir it really well, its much closer to the texture of normal yogurt.

  24. Sandra, this is a low-sugar yogurt. It does have some fat.

    I'm not publishing your comment because I believe everyone should make their own food choices. If you don't like the yogurt, don't buy it. If you want to share your opinions about what is healthy or not, you will have to do that on your own blog, not by criticizing something I buy and obviously many other people enjoy.

  25. Does this yogurt use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar, as some low carb products do? If that's the case I would avoid it entirely for a variety of reasons.

    Thanks for your very kind response to my comment regarding your comment (which was definitely too harsh, as I see when I re-read it above.) In my defense I can only say that I get frequent negative "food police" type comments from people who seem to be only interested in pointing out that anyone who disagrees with their opinion is wrong. Obviously you're not one of those people but, since I wasn't really touting this as a low-fat yogurt (more of a low-carb product) I guess I couldn't quite figure out why you were talking about that.

    As for lowfat vs. fat, one of the main reason I chose the SBD was because I knew I could never follow a plan where you couldn't use fats like olive oil or others. But when I am saying my recipes are South Beach Diet "friendly" I do feel like I have to respect their position as far as saturated fats, at least to some degree.

    I do hope though that I'm always willing to learn more about things and re-examine my opinions, and I appreciate you following up on the comment!

  28. I'm eating this yogurt now and I love it. But when I found out it doesn't have cultures in it I now mix a spoonful of greek yogurt into it. And of course granola. Yummie!

  29. I randomly found this yogurt at Ralph's in southern California. I thought it was going to be disgusting, but then I saw the love of my life listed on the ingredients: SUCRALOSE! and I was not disappointed. This yogurt is SO.AMAZINGLY.TASTY! obviously, it does have a bit of carbs and sugar, but compare to cottage cheese and greek yogurt.

  30. I have a cookbook that is calling for Kroger Carbmaster Yogurt...we do not have a Krogers in the Western NY area. could anyone please tell me how to purchase this product, or better yet, is there another yogurt that would be similar to this one?
