Joseph's Oat Bran and Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread

(Update: I wrote more about Joseph's Flax, Oat Bran, and Whole Wheat Tortillas and Pita Bread in April 2008 and then in 2011 I was excited when I was able to order the Joseph's products from their website.)

I recently stayed with some friends on Block Island, a beautiful and charming island get-away off the coast of Rhode Island shown in this photo. I knew that on Block Island we would be having lots of good food, and I wanted to be sure I had some low carb options available, so in Portsmouth I picked up a package of low carb pita bread to take with me. This was absolutely without a doubt the best pita bread I had ever tasted, low carb or not! I used it to make "sandwiches" with cheese and lunch meat and enjoyed it every time I ate it. We had a delicious tomato spread that everyone was eating on french bread, and I happily spread it on my pita.

The pita bread was so delicious that I bought several packages to bring home and put in my freezer. Joseph's Oat Bran and Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread has 1.5 grams fat, 0 cholesterol, 334 mg sodium, 10 total carbs (5g diegary fiber, 1 sugar), and 7g protien. That means each pita has a total of only 5 net carbs. The bread is made by Joseph's Middle East Bakery, Inc. in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

I haven't had time to do an exhaustive web search, but I didn't find them on my first try. I'm planning to visit some specialty stores in Utah with the package in hand and see if I can convince one of them to order it for me, it's that good. If anyone knows how to get this product on-line I would love to hear from you.

(Edit: in 2010 Joseph left a comment with a link to the correct website for Joseph's Bakery. They are working on having mail order for these products. Read his comment below for more information.)

  1. I searched and searched the web to find Joseph's. It seems to be a Northeast thing and perhaps too fresh to be bought over the web. I did find it for delivery from Peapod but they don't have service in Salt Lake. Sorry.

  2. Kalyn,

I love this pitas! I discovered them awhile back at my local Stop and Shop, and they are just great. Very fresh, and soft, and ideal for low carb meals.

  6. I just tried this today for the first time. My friend brought some over the other day and left it so I could try it. I am going to assume that he got it at Fareway, here in Iowa, because that is where he got the gyro meat and tzatziki sauce as well.

Did I mention how good it is? I just ate three huge gyros. This is good pita bread.

  7. I had Joseph's Pita in Minneapolis last week and loved it. I bought it in a Byerly's which is a little like Whole Foods. I'm trying to find it in Washington DC. They don't appear to have a website but the bakery is located in Lawrence, MA.

  8. I have been buying these pitas for the past month at my Wal-Mart store in Jefferson City, Missouri and absolutely LOVE them. Two weeks ago I could no longer find them and this week was just told by the store that they no longer carry them. Maybe your Wal-Mart carries them. It's worth a try. Anyone know where they can be bought in Missouri?

  12. Joseph's Oat Bran & Whole Wheat pita bread makes terrific pita chips. I separate the pitas around the edges, sprinkle with Cajun spice, then cut a stack (up to 6) into eight sections and bake in the oven at 350. Great with hummus.

  15. I used to live in NH. I'm in Fl. now. My Dad went back on a visit and contacted Joseph's for me. they will have a web site sometime after the first of the year. He brought me back a case of their oatbran and soy lavash bread which is even better---much softer, and is soft even after defrosted. Don't be disheartened. They are a small N.E. company. It may take them a long time for national distribution. I have been promised a website is coming. Hang in there.

  18. 11/13/06: I am looking for Joseph's Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat FlourTortillas which I bought during the summer on Cape Cod, MA. I am in Arizona for the winter and miss these tortillas. I used them in a breakfast recipe I found on the diabetic web site, OneTouchGold.com. I'll check back to see if anyone responds with a web store carrying this product.

  29. 1/25/07 I am from Va Bch and the Walmart at Red Mill Commons only carries the Joseph's Pita Bread. I have been complaining to the bakery manager there about the Joseph's Wraps. They stopped carring the lavish wraps sometime Nov/Dec 06. I was trying to find a web page today but no luck. Thank you all for the address and e-mail address - I plan on using them today.

  36. I just had some of Joseph's Pita bread. I think it is important to note that the package says "distributed by Joseph's Middle East Bakery, Inc." NOT Made By. In light of all the recent fallout regarding tainted wheat Gluten, I intend to find out where they are made.

  47. Ok guys...I have to tell you that I can get Joseph's Bread in almost every grocery store in my area. Of course my area is North of Boston. I am thrilled to know that my experience with their low carb breads with variety that helps me stay "low carb" and treat others without them knowing it is awesome. If you are experiencing difficulty with getting it ( I am going out on a limb now), just drop me an e-mail...and perhaps I can find a way to help you out. All "low carb" lovers unite!

  48. Anonymous, I don't see any way for people to get your e-mail (not that I'm implying that you should feel obligated to help people get this, just wondered if you forgot to include it?)

  49. I would just like to clarify that the official website for Joseph's Middle East bakery is www.JosephsBakery.com

Although we have a relatively new site, I am confident that in due time it will be one that is both fully functioning and useful for those across the country searching for our product. We are currently developing our Online Bakery and Store Locator, which will both be fully functioning by March, 2010.

The website www.josephsmiddleeastbakery.com is NOT is any way associated with the company based in Lawrence, MA that everyone here seems to be talking about.

On a side note: outside of the New England area, your best bet to find the product is Walmart and BJ's. A "Product Request Letter" will be imported on the official website in the very near future. This feature will allow customers to download, edit and submit letters to Store Managers of specific supermarket chains.

Hope this helps everyone and thank you for supporting us during our website development!

    Joseph
