I Confess

Food blogging Icon Amy has urged fellow food bloggers to confess their sins, shortcomings, or kitchen shortcuts, an idea she confesses she stole from David Lebovitz. After thinking about it for a day or two, I guess I do have a few things I can confess to.

  1. The only time I clean my house really well is when I'm having a party.
  2. Every day of my life I drink at least one or two Diet Cokes with lime.
  3. I have a number of good recipes that use Campbell's Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Chicken Soup.
  4. I have to make a real effort to remember to eat any fruit.
  5. I put salt on my fruit when I do eat it, especially watermelon, cantelope, apples, and pears.
  6. I wash mushrooms in the salad spinner.
  7. I've never made bread except in a machine.
  8. I've never made a pie, at least not that I can remember.
  9. I probably won't cook anything that takes more than an hour of preparation time.
  10. I don't like squid or oysters.
  11. I love Popeye's Chicken Red Beans and Rice (but they don't have it in Utah.)
  12. I waste quite a bit of food (and do feel guilty about it).
  13. I've never made mayonnaise from scratch, and don't plan to.
  14. My idea of a great weekend is staying home puttering about in the kitchen for two days and not taking a shower until Sunday night.
  15. I eat hummus on my finger right out of the container.
  16. I mostly use garlic from a jar.
  17. Years ago, when I used to teach aerobics, sometimes I would go to my favorite burger place and order fries and onion rings (both!) for a "snack".
  18. Most of my pans are from Big Lots or T.J. Maxx.
  19. I use nonstick pans.
  20. In college my favorite food was Taco Bell.
  21. I like having parties more than going to other people's parties.
  22. I've thought about quitting teaching for a job with higher pay, but then I think about working all summer.
  23. I don't feel the need to grind my own spices with a mortar and pestle.
  24. Although I know locally grown food tastes better, I don't really care if my food is organic.
  25. I'm always a little bit in debt from spending more than I can really afford on cookbooks, specialty foods, and kitchen items.
  26. I really hate reality TV, even the ones where they supposedly "help" the people.
  27. I have more than 100 bottles of spices and herbs.
  28. I use Miracle-Gro on my garden.
  29. I consider Best Foods Mayo a "staple" and buy 3 or 4 jars when it goes on sale.
  30. Some days I eat two or three sugar-free fudgesicles.
  31. I have a list of the contents on the side of my freezer with the amounts written in pencil, and when I take something out I erase it and decrease the number.
  32. I'm compulsive about buying necessities on sale and hardly ever run out of anything.
  33. I hate rice pudding.
  34. I've never tasted leeks.
  35. Years ago I worked in a French restaurant where we ate fried bread dipped in Bernaise sauce as a snack.
  36. I love "fry sauce" (a Utah concoction made of ketchup and mayo, for dipping french fries).
  37. There are a lot of worse things I could confess to, but my fourth grade students or their parents sometimes read this blog.

Okay...we have to do something about the never tasting leeks thing...In my potato-leek soup, they're blended smooth with a blender, so you could get the taste without the texture (if textures bother you like they do me). Basically, it's a mild onion, like a green onion...all that's good about an onion without the overpowering onion....

Some of the parents of your fourth graders, would love to learn more about your confessions. 37 confessions, not bad, but I'm sure some of the student's parents could compete with that! Love your Blog!!!!

Homemade mayo is great and not hard to make. But Best Foods/Hellman's is just as good and keeps forever. They're different, homemade and BF, and I like them both.

I second lisasd on leeks. Love 'em.

These confessions are fun to read. I must come up with some of my own one of these days.

Hey Kalyn-
We ladies at the Naughty Curry spice blog completely neglect our mortar and pestle, and we don't give a damn about not being gourmet.
Just wanted to share that, sister! :)
Carry on.

Naudee, that's fun! This is such an old post that a few of these things have changed, but not many.
