What Nice People Are Saying About Kalyn's Kitchen

It's always gratifying when people recognize your hard work. Here are some places that have said nice things about Kalyn's Kitchen.

Thanks to a Couple of Great Guys

If you've been watching Kalyn's Kitchen evolve, you've probably noticed that I've learned a great deal about internet publishing in a short time (with much, much more still to learn!) I started my blog in April of 2005 simply as a way to share recipes with friends who were asking for them after they witnessed my great success on the South Beach Diet.

Weekend Herb Blogging #4 (Herbs from Around the World)

One remarkable thing about the internet is the way it has joined people from around the world into huge communities based on their interests. That's certainly been true in the food blogging world, and it was reflected in this week's participants who were eager to show off their herbs, veggies, plants, or flowers.

For the benefit of those following The South Beach diet, notations after each recipe listing indicate Kalyn's opinion as to which phase of the diet that recipe can be used for.

(If you're looking for phase one breakfasts that don't contain eggs, I'm afraid I haven't come up with anything for that but there are some ideas from readers in the comments on the original category page for eggs.)

Weekend Herb Blogging #4 and the Second Herb of Simon and Garfunkel's Famous Four

They have certainly done their part to bring herbs into mainstream awareness, so this week to introduce my entry for Weekend Herb Blogging, I'm giving you Simon and Garfunkel. I must confess (at the risk of showing my age here) that when I first heard "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" glorified in song, I had probably never used them in cooking. As the years have passed and I've gotten more and more obsessed with cooking, I have come to love them all. Last week I brought you sage for Weekend Herb Blogging, and this week I am happy to present one of my very favorite herbs, rosemary.

I Am So Flattered!

Just about every day when I get home from work I spend a little time reading blogs and checking what's happening with my blog. One thing I check is the Technorati link at the bottom of my sidebar (right hand side) that says "Blogs that link here." If someone has linked to me, I want to know so I can link back to them in return.

Weekend Herb, Plant, Veggie, or Flower Blogging Reaches Week Four!

We have reached that time of the week known as the weekend. Now, depending on your line of work, you may have more or less fond feelings about what you do on the actual days of the weekend, but in the food blogging world, the weekend is the time when we let our hair down a little. Some bloggers write about and photograph their cats, a tradition started by Clare at Eat Stuff. Other bloggers write about and photograph their dogs, an idea that originated with Sweetnicks.

Kalyn Makes Tony's Low Carb Pizza

(In February 2009 I discovered a better crust for this type of pizza and posted a recipe for South Beach Diet Friendly Flatbread Pizza. I'd prefer that now over the pizza recipe in this post.)

Steak and Mushroom Kabobs (Kalyn Tries out her new Kabob Baskets)

Back in August when I was living the great life of a teacher on summer vacation, I visited a couple of friends, first in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and then on Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island. While I was there I had fun doing "foodie shopping" with my friend Tia, who is married to a great cook and is a very foodie eater herself. When I'm traveling, I like to buy souvenir cooking utensils. In a discount store in Portsmouth, Tia and I found some kabob baskets for the grill. They were meant to holdmeat and veggies like you'd put on one kabob, but instead of skewering it, you put it inside the basket and snap the lid shut. When I went to put the steak and mushrooms into the kabob baskets, I had too much, so I ended up cooking the mushrooms in a grill pan, but here's the steak inside the baskets.

Recipe for Curried Chicken and Broccoli Soup

I love to make up soup recipes from leftovers, and I created this recipe when I had leftover roast chicken to use up. I also had a small amount of broccoli that was still good, but slightly past its prime. I wanted to make soup, so I searched on Foodieview using the words chicken, broccoli, and soup. I got some pretty strange results, but I did find one recipe that gave me the idea for this soup. I made this Saturday morning, and ate a big bowl for breakfast, so I guess it was pretty good!

Roast Chicken with Cilantro and Lime

This recipe needs a new photo, but the roast chicken was delicious!

Roast Chicken is a great meal for the South Beach Diet, or any kind of low glycemic or low carb eating plan, although if you're on South Beach remember the caution on saturated fat and eat the leaner breast meat.  It's the flavorful marinade with lime, garlic, onion, cilantro, and just a hint of spice that makes this chicken so good.  I have a George Foreman Rotisserie, which I use to cook my chicken, but you can easily cook it in the oven. This looked so tempting that I started cutting it up before I realized I hadn't taken a photo, so the photo doesn't do it justice!

Biaggi Restaurant in Salt Lake City

Thursday and Friday of last week was the annual Utah Teacher's Convention, which allowed me to do something I normally don't get to do, go out to lunch on a work day! One of the few things I don't like about teaching is that you have to eat at school; there's simply no time to go anywhere else.

Weekend Herb Blogging Recap: Three Entries for Week Three

First there was Eat Stuff with Weekend Cat Blogging, now in it's 20th week. Then there was Sweetnicks with Weekend Dog Blogging. Weekend Herb (veggie, plant, flower) blogging was born when I joking asked Sweetnicks if I could submit a photo of one of my plants, since I didn't have a cat or a dog.

COOKBOOK REVIEW: The South Beach Diet Quick and Easy Cookbook

In the summer of 2004 I had a huge yard sale. One thing I sold was over 200 novels and cookbooks. Even with that many cookbooks gone, I still had several hundred left, more than any person really needs. After that sale, I decided that I would try to stop buying so many books and cookbooks. I often buy novels at Costco, read them in a day or two, and never pick up the book again. That's like money down the drain I figured, because you can always get books from the library.

Weekend Herb Blogging #3 and Another Childhood Food Memory: Sage

It's the weekend again, and for those of us food bloggers who don't have a dog or a cat, it seems the perfect time to blog about herbs, veggies, plants, or flowers. So far, the wonderful Indira at Mahanandi and I are the only ones who seem to think this is fun, but if any other food bloggers join in, I will do a round up at the end of the weekend. (Send me your link in an e-mail if you have herbs you have been dying to show off.) Stay tuned to see what develops with that.

Childhood Food Memories
A Trip to Bountiful

I was tagged by Stef of the wonderful Pinoy food blog Stefoodie for this meme in which you tell your five favorite food memories from childhood. At the risk of coming dangerously close to revealing my age, I'm going to start by saying that I grew up in the town of Bountiful, Utah, and my childhood years were in the fifties and sixties. Bountiful is quite a large suburb of Salt Lake City now (they are even getting a Costco), but in those days it was a small town where no one locked their doors and kids could and did wander the streets at night with complete safety. It was a great place to grow

In Which Biggles Teaches Kalyn (via the internet) How to Adjust her Stove Burners and Kalyn is Eternally Grateful

One of the most fun things about writing a food blog is getting to "meet" so many other bloggers and the friendships that develop. When I published the photos of my kitchen, I started corresponding with Biggles, gourmet barbecue chef, fellow antique stove owner, and author of the great blog Meathenge. Biggles encouraged me to shell out the cash to get my oven thermostat replaced and shared his own adventures in oven refurbishing, complete with happy ending and smaller price tag than I was anticipating.

Why I Love the South Beach Diet

If you're a regular reader of Kalyn's Kitchen, you've probably noticed my wonderful blog header. Designed by my super talented brother, Rand, the header tells how I came to create Kalyn's Kitchen after I lost 35 pounds on the South Beach Diet while still eating lots and lots of delicious food, and friends started asking me for recipes. All that is still true, except for the part about the 35 pounds.

Splenda Introduces New Brown Sugar Blend

On October 5, Splenda Brown Sugar Blend became available in stores in the United States. I first read about this on Livinlavidalocarb, but when I tried to buy the brown sugar Splenda, I couldn't find it. But I kept looking and I found it today in an Albertson's store near my house in Salt Lake City. This is not a huge store, so I am guessing that if I found it here, you will soon be able to find it at a store near you.

Food Blog Finds: Great Low Carb Recipes Found on Other Food Blogs

It's time for another recap of the low carb recipes I found this week on other food blogs. These recipes are amazingly easy to find. Every night when I come home from work, I spend an hour (or 2 or 3!) reading other cooking blogs. If I find a blog that has a recipe that is low carb, I bookmark it. This week as I was reading cooking blogs and looking for low carb recipes, I found a recipe that I'm sure is going to become a personal favorite of mine. Tony's Food Chronicles is written by a guy who is not a low carb fanatic. He does sometimes post recipes that are not low carb. However, I knew that he was interested in low carb eating because he had a link to my blog, and earlier this year he was experimenting with a low carb pizza dough. This week Tony published a recipe for low carb "pizza" which uses Carb Chopper flour tortillas, which are my very favorite low carb flour tortillas. Pizza is one of the high carb foods that I really crave sometimes, and these mini low carb pizzas sound fantastic. Tony also has great photos to accompany this, and great step-by-step directions for making the pizzas.

Weekend Herb Blogging: Still No Dog or Cat, but Here's a Photo of My Oregano

It's the weekend again, the time when food bloggers love to show off their pets. I believe Eat Stuff is the blog that started this trend, with Weekend Cat Blogging. Then Sweetnicks got the ball rolling for the dog lovers with Weekend Dog Blogging. As I mentioned last weekend, I don't have a dog or a cat. That's why I decided to show off my herbs on the weekend, at least until they are buried in snow. Here is a photo of the oregano which is still holding on in my garden, even though it's October.

A Bowl of Green Tomatoes! Stay Tuned!

I previously wrote about how Nick, a faithful reader of my blog, had requested me to use my culinary imagination and see what I could dream up using green tomatoes. It sounded like fun, but alas, my garden simply didn't produce much in the way of tomatoes this year. I had a few small pebble size green ones, but not enough to make any kind of dish.

Pondering the List: 10 Foods You Should Never Eat

The Center for Science in the Public Interest just released a list of "Ten Foods You Should Never Eat." They had the word "never" underlined, just in case you were possibly considering eating one of these foods and needed more encouragement not to do it.

Congratulations to My Good Friend Jimmy

One of the most fun things about writing a blog is getting to "meet" so many fun people online. When I first started writing Kalyn's Kitchen, one of the first bloggers I met was Jimmy Moore, who writes a blog called LivinLaVidaLoCarb. Jimmy lost 180 pounds in one year following the Atkins diet and became a great defender of the low carb way of eating. Then he wrote a book about his experience losing that much weight, becoming committed to exercise, and completely transforming his body through will power and hard work. Jimmy's book is being released online today, and you can read about it and order it by visiting LivinLaVidaLoCarb.

Food Blog Finds: Great Low Carb Recipes Found on Other Food Blogs

Now that I am seriously committed to following the South Beach Diet way of eating (with only very rare lapses to have french fries at Hires), I am noticing more and more how some people feel that if you are eating low carb food you will never have anything good to eat again. That's one reason I think it's so fun to look through other food blogs each week and find recipes that are low carb, or can easily be made low carb with a few minor changes. Again this week, I found some good ones.

Weekend Garden Update and Why I Can't Make Anything With Green Tomatoes

This tiny half bucket of produce is about all that's left of my garden for this year. Those pinkish looking tomatoes you see are the last of the Brandywines. No more sliced tomatoes with goat cheese, cucumbers Caesar, or Creamed Zucchini until next summer. Sigh.

Recipe for Sausage Linguini (Sophie Pays a Visit to Kalyn's Kitchen)

One of my best friends is a woman named Susan who has never been that interested in cooking. For most of our friendship I would occasionally cook for her, and she would take me out for sushi in return. It was a good arrangement for both of us.

Weekend Herb Blogging: I Don't Have a Dog or a Cat, Can I Post a Photo of My Plants?

A few weeks back I told Sweetnicks that I was planning to post a picture of one of my plants, since I don't have a dog or a cat to show when all the food bloggers start doing weekend dog blogging or weekend cat blogging. I was just kidding at first, but the idea grew on me. That's what inspired me to take this picture of the basil crop I picked last weekend.

In Which Kalyn Gives a Glimpse
of her Actual Kitchen

Now that I have a camera, although not much skill yet in using it, several of my friends have suggested that I should publish some photos of my kitchen. If not the entire kitchen, at least the stove, they insist. My friend Susan even went so far as to insist, "You are your stove".

CALLING ALL FOODIES
Have You Checked Out FoodieView?

As the internet grows, more and more people are having good ideas about how to organize information to make it more user-friendly. An idea whose time had certainly come recently surfaced in the form of FoodieView, a site that searches most of the recipe search banks on the internet, including places such as Epicurious, All Recipes, Food Network, and many more. There are even a few well established food bloggers who have made it into the index. (Congratulations!)

Weekend Vegetable Blogging - The End of the Tomatoes

In the food blog world, where I've been slowly settling in over the last five months, people spend weekends talking about their pets. There is weekend cat blogging, and weekend dog blogging, and possibly weekend some other kind of animal I don't even know about blogging.
