A Cold Remedy That Really Works!

COLD REMEDIES MEME
I was tagged for this meme by the lovely Paz from The Cooking Adventures of Chef Paz. I'm sorry if my entry for the meme sounds more like an ad for Zicam than a post about home remedies for the common cold. But the truth is, even since I discovered this product, I've never used anything besides Zicam when I get a cold. Since I'm spending every work day, Monday through Friday, with a room full of 26 little germ carriers, I get exposed to a lot of cold germs. Zicam is a homeopathic remedy for colds which is sold over the counter in the U.S. It contains zinc, also an ingredient in other cold remedies. The makers claim if you use Zicam at the first sign of a cold symptom, it "actually shorters the duration and severity of the cold". I tend to be skeptical about advertising, but in this case that's exactly what it did for me. I've tried all the versions, nasal mist, swabs, and cold lozenges, and they all work.

I don't know if Zicam is sold outside of the U.S. (Anyone know? Leave a comment.) It's also ironic that Boing Boing just reported yesterday that Zicam paid $12,000,000 to settle a lawsuit against people who claimed that regular use of this product destroyed their sense of smell. The Boing Boing writer who reported about the lawsuit apparently also likes Zicam. He included a link to a story from 2004 where he called it a cure for the common cold. I agree with that completely. Lawsuit or not, I will keep using Zicam.

I'm going to do something unorthodox here, and I hope Paz won't mind. Because I am so completely a believer in this product, I'm not going to tag anyone else to tell about their cold remedies. Instead, if you have used Zicam and agree that it really does do what the advertising claims, tag yourself and write about it on your blog. Leave a comment telling me that you are tagging yourself and I will come back later and put in links for anyone who chooses to tag themself. (And even if no one else decides to spread the word about Zicam, I'll never stop using it!)

WHB #16
As soon as I do a few chores around the house, I'll be heading out to buy groceries and look for something interesting to write about for Weekend Herb Blogging. There is a bit of snow on the ground in Utah, but I'm happy to report that we are one week into the third term of school. Anyone who is a teacher knows that means the school year is more than half over! I like my job, but nothing can replace having time to stay home and putter in the garden. For the last few years it's been so warm here that I've planted my garden in late April, so I'm officially starting to count down to that date.

Weekend Herb Blogging is not just about herbs; in fact, it's not even just for the weekend. What it is about is learning about new plants and foods from around the world. If you'd like to join in, simply write about any herb, plant, veggie, or flower, link to Kalyn's Kitchen with the words *Weekend Herb Blogging* and send me the link to your post. (Send it to kalynskitchen AT comcast DOT net.) I need it by midafternoon on Sunday (Utah time) if you want to be included in the Re-cap on Sunday night. You can use the Weekend Herb Blogging Logo or a smaller version in your post if you wish, but it's totally optional. If herbs aren't really you thing, head over to Sweetnicks for Weekend Dog Blogging or Eat Stuff for Weekend Cat Blogging.

ONE REASON I LIKE LIVING IN UTAH: This Sunday I will be going to the Sundance Film Festival so I may be posting the recap for Weekend Herb blogging a bit later than usual. I'll be sure to let you know if I see any movie stars!

Hooray for Zicam ... you're right it DOES really work - my husband swears by the stuff. Personally, my compulsive hand-washing keeps me from even catching colds - but that's another story!

Another cold remedy that works is called Airborne. You can read about it on www.airbornehealth.com

It was developed by a school teacher!
