If you're a regular reader of Kalyn's Kitchen you know I've been hinting for a while about some exciting news relating to a magazine, a photo shoot, and the reason I am no longer going to be able to keep my age a secret. Now it's time to let you all in on it: Kalyn's Kitchen was featured in an article about the South Beach Diet which appears in the March 14 issue of Woman's World Magazine. The magazine showed up in stores today in Utah and other places too, judging from the number of blog visitors and e-mails I've been getting. Woman's World is sold mostly in grocery stores near the checkstand if you want to see the article. This exciting little adventure started a few months ago, when I got an e-mail from an editor at Woman's World who was searching on the internet for South Beach Diet and stumbled on my humble little cooking blog. Within days, she had interviewed me and Utah photographer George Frey had come to my house for a photo shoot. (Thanks George, for making me look so good. You can contact him at georgefrey AT mac Dot com if you live in Utah and want a great photographer.)
I received a couple of copies of the magazine from Woman's World a few days ago and my students were certainly excited to see their teacher in a magazine. One student even said, "Gee Ms. Denny, you sure aren't fat any more." Considering they're only ten, I think that's meant to be a compliment.
Welcome to anyone reading this who has found their way here from the article in Woman's World. Kalyn's Kitchen is my cooking blog, where I share recipes for the kind of delicious food that helped me lose 42 pounds, gain more energy than I'd ever had before, and stop taking cholesteral medicine. I love the South Beach Diet, and it has truly changed my life.
This is a food blog, not just a diet blog, so I also talk about other things related to good food here. If you're not familiar with food blogs, the most recently published things are at the top of the main column. To see earlier recipes, go to the left sidebar and check out the Recipe Archives.

I'm not a diet expert, just an ordinary teacher who loves to cook, so I'm not qualified to give diet advice. I do recommend highly that you read The South Beach Diet
book thoroughly before you start the diet.

Congratulations Kalyn,
I'm looking forward to seeing the article (and discovering how old you are).
eqj (42-120)
Oh, just tell!
I'm 55!
(Congrats.)
xx
Ok. Let's try that again. Sometimes I am brain dead when I type. TCL and CC, Yes, I am between 42 and 120. Ok, I admit it CC, I am older than you. But not much.
Cyndi, I'm not sure this is really the big time, but it is pretty fun.
Kalyn, that's awesome that you were featured in the magazine. My mom lost quite a bit of weight on the SBD. While I'm not trying to lose weight, I do think the principles of the SBD are solid and I try to generally live by those for health reasons. Your blog is great!
(Cookiecrumb-Holy cow, I thought you were OLDER!!!) Over to you Kalyn, I just had to say that as CC just left a snarky comment about my hairstyle on my blog! You look great! And I admire your strength, it takes that to loose so much weight! Anyway, no need to buy the mag (fortunately for me) as the clipping you show actually states your age!
Wow! You must be really chuffed. I can only dream of the willpower it takes and am impressed. I'm only a small bit over what I should be, but by eating healthier I've for the first time in 15 years got my cholesterol down to reasonable levels. Still I should try and lose a bit but just can't keep off the sauce, which I think is my real problem.
Kalyn, you look fantastic!!!
Just thought I would tell people that TCL, CC and Cyndi left their comments before the magazine clipping was added to the post, so that's why I was teasing them about finding out my age. Sigh. I guess everyone knows it now.
Great success! Congratulations! I lost weight by another diet, but the principle is similar, lots of fibre and low carb :-). And as a mother of a ten year old boy: It is a compliment!
There's NO ONE better profiled than you, Ms Denny!!! Pretty soon you'll be sharing still more good news! And who knows, maybe somehow, in its own way, it all started with a 'humble little blog' ... go get 'im!
Congratulations and what a great inspiration!
Keep up the good work and for sharing the journey.
I'm also a teacher of ten year olds in Utah. I want to lose forty pounds but struggle. I don't think I take enough time for myself. You have inspired me to try the SBD. By the way, we are about the same age and you look great.
congratulations Kalyn! You deserve it. :)
Are you sure the magazine didn't make a mistake? You sure look more like 47! :)
Well done & well deserved!
Congratulations, Kalyn!
congrats! i love your recipes because i am on a low carb, high protein diet due to gastric bypass (i had WAY more to lose than 42 lbs...). thanks for sharing
Hi Kalyn,
Wow! Congratulations! I hope this wonderful publicity brings lots of new readers to your blog. Yoo hoo!!!
Congratulations! That's quite an accomplishment. And a testimonial to the fact that you can lose weight AND still enjoy good food.

Congratulations Kalyn ! You look great. I am sure you feel GREAT too.
A year ago, I was on a similar diet where I lost 30 pounds in 2-3 months. It feels great. And people look at you differently !!
Congratulations! You look so nice!
How cool Kalyn!!! Coangrats! Love your photo, you look great!
Kalyn! Terrific about the magazine, but even more terrific about your hard work losing weight and living healthier. You are certainly a wonderful inspiration (and it's so nice to see you in person!) Congrats.
Congratuations! You really deserve this recognition for all of your hard work.
Wow, Kalyn! That is seriously cool, and you look fabulous, m'dear!
A picture and an age reveal too! Wow! Congrats, Kalyn!
Fantastic Kalyn! I'll be looking to see if we can find the magazine here so we can read the article!
Hi again,
I just read the updated post. This is good news indeed.
Wow - you look fantastic! Congrats on the article! [May I have your autograph?] ;-)
Hi Kalyn
I picked up the magazine today and it led me right to your blog. I am a South Beach wanna be...i started, lost 10 lbs and then took a trip to CA (I'm cold in WI with snow) I ate about 6 tangelos fresh off the tree & have just struggled to give it all up again. I have high cholesterol & bp, hypothyroid & degenerative discs in my spine...all at the ripe old age of 35 : ) However, I know God's mercies are new every day! the ONLY way I feel better is to lose about 40 lbs right now...your my hero : )
I don't even know where to start on your blog, except to say thank you!! I need recipes that I can cook one day & rely on the rest of the week....I homeschool my two children. I've been promised a new car & a vacation alone with my husband when i reach my goal!
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Kat
WOW!!! You look fabulous in that picture. Congrats. Well, done!
kalyn,
you'll get your CSI appearance any day now. very happy for you!!
I was late for work and didn't have time to make a sack lunch, so I stopped in Kroger, bought the magazine and South Beach Diet Wrap for breakfast, Peanut Butter Cereal Bar before exercising, and a South Beach Entree for lunch. I can't believe I'm not hungry and don't have any cravings. Thank you so much for your inspiration and recipes. I'm 56!
Great news!.....you look terrific!
I think you are getting more than your 15 minutes of fame that we have all been allotted. I love the look and spirit of your blog. I admire your tenacity in putting together a daily blog with no reward except one of accomplishment and wanting to share with others.
Way to go, Kalyn.
Cheers,
Wanda.
Congratulations, Kalyn! and yes, I agree with everyone here, you do look terrific! :-)
I am also 50+ so am glad to come across this site. So many diet articles feature younger people. This is one of the best blogs I have ever seen and you must put a lot of time into it. I pick up Womans World every week. It is very good reading for a small price. Congratulations for being featured in it.
'Congratulations' just doesn't seem like a big enough word for this (and you), Kalyn. It truly is exciting news. And am I the only one with a little tear in my eye after reading the article and all the comments? Joyful, inspiring, absolutely wonderful!
Kalyn

Good for you! I am sure that your blog will help you to keep off the weight that you worked so hard to lose. All this support. Very smart!
Dear Kalyn,
Thank you so much for your incredible, delicious recipes. I'm your real fan.
I'm new to SBD. I have a question which I cannot find the answer for - is buckwheat allowed during the phase 1? If not, what phase does it belong to?
Again, thank you very much!
Ilana
Kalyn,
I am a fifty three YO firefighter and have lost 51 pounds since March on SBD. This blog is a great way to rejuvenate my recipes and keep motivation going. I am shooting for another 50 by next year this time. Thanks for all your hard work and research.
Craig, way to go. Please keep me posted about how you're doing on the second fifty pounds.
Dear Kalyn,
I'm a teacher too and have been thinking about starting SBD phase 1 again...it's the only diet that's worked for me on a long-term basis. I'm inspired by your story, and am making my SBD grocery list now!
Cheers,
Beth
Hello Kalyn,
I just stumbled upon your blog today, and was surprised to find such a very tastefully designed and well written blog. It is a pleasure reading. Congrats on loosing all those pounds. You look healthy and young. Keep it up!
Skinny girl from CA
That is very neat the you were featured in a magazine. Congratulations!
Belle
Thank you so much for taking time to create your site. I too am a very busy business woman who has minimal personal time. You have done my homework for me by posting all your wonderful recipes. In addition, your testimony is a great inspiration. I just started my SBD trek two days ago. Wish me luck. I need to drop 30 lbs to be back to my normal and comfortable weight. Sunny DJ
Wow! Kalyn, You have been a great help to me. Your recipes seem so exciting! I had grown tired of the same approach to breakfast daily. Your recipes have been a life saver. The SBD has been very successful for me. This is my second Phase 1 adventure. This time around seems totally differnt thanks to your fantastic recipes!!

Wow, you are inspiring! Me and hubby are on our 4th day and so far, we are doing well. not really sure if we lost weight yet but have passed thru the sugar and carbs cravings. Congrats and I hope it'll work for us too.
Anonymous, if you stick with it, it will definitely work! Good luck.
I just want to say thank you for continuing to inspire people like me who give up too easily. I have over 100 pounds to lose and several years ago I tried the SB diet and got to a 40 pound loss and then leveled off and quit. Part of the problem for me is cooking and I am so encouraged to see that you are staying with SB and still providing delicious recipes. Any suggestions for someone starting all over again? God Bless.
Anonymous, look on the right sidebar under "South Beach Stuff" and there's a post I wrote about getting started on South Beach. And the only other advice I have is, don't panic if you slip and go off the diet, just get back again!
Ms. Kalyn,
Thank you so much for sharing your yummy recipe. Almost two years ago I bought a prevention guide thst featured the south beach diet 2-week quickstart plan. We tried it and loved the food and the results. My husband lost more than 75 pounds and has kept them off for a year and a half now. I love your recipies and I will try some of the breakfast casserole.
Thank You,
Lyn formerly of Kaysville UT and now from Hochspeyer Germany
Hi Kalyn! I've been following your blog now for about a week and am addicted to your recipes! My husband and I decided to start the sbd this week after months of eating poorly. This is my 3rd time on the sbd. :) 1st was before my wedding, 2nd after the first baby and 3rd is now after our second child! Each time I achieved my goal weight and stayed there until the next baby. :) I wanted to write you to say that I love your recipes! I've tried about 6 of them from your recipe favorites and my husband keeps telling me how much easier it is this time around (he does the sbd when I do it because I cook the food haha). That is all thanks to your awesome recipes! The first few times we suffered a bit because of the lack of variety. Now my hubby says that he doesn't feel like he's on a diet at all. We're already relatively thin people (113lbs and 150lbs) but wanted to get healthier. I was feeling so sluggish with two kids from loads of junk food and the cravings were insatiable! We're on day 4 of phase 1 and we haven't felt tired at all! Thanks so much for your blog. I think you'll see me more regularly on your blog from now on. :) Thanks again!
Slice thanks so much. So glad to hear you're enjoying the blog.
Hello Kalyn,
I love your blog. You are such a big inspiration to me. I was diagnosed with Insulin resistance a year ago after going through lot of suffering and mis-diagnosis. But now Iam glad to find what's wrong and how to control the problem. Low carb food has really helped me and recipes from the wonderful blog land doenot make healthy eating boring :) Thank you for putting this blog together and sharing your story. You were the motivation to start my blog.
Hugs :)
Sheetal
Sheetal, that's great. So glad the blog is helpful and that you're doing well.
Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your successful diet plan. I'm helping my husband to lose weight through the South Beach diet. He loves soup. The pressure cooker is the way to go. I work full time and am on the bus to and from work about 3 hours a day. I'll be looking for your hints for quick meals.
Anonymous, there are about 800 recipes in the archives (on the left side) including some for pressure cooker soups, so have fun!
Hi, Kalyn. It's a very snowy day in the Northeast and I decided to access your blog because my very wise niece, Laura, recommeneded it to me.
I am a retired school teacher who has been blessed with four beautiful grandchildren that I have been caring for from time to time since I've retired.
I love the South Beach eating plan and have been following it off and on for several years.
I do not like cooking but find myself to be inspired my the South Beach recipes both in the book and on your blog. I refuse to call this a 'diet' , except in the true, dictionary mode: an eating plan. It is not a sacrifice and is so healthy on so many levels. I even spend time in the kitchen because although this way of eating takes planning, the actual cooking feels much less burdensome than other plans. I have finally lost that last ten pounds and feel like I have a handle on keeping it off or, at least, a plan that will get me back there[phase one]. Peace and healthy eating!
Thanks for all the nice feedback about the blog. I do agree South Beach is a very user-friendly way to manage your weight.
Hi Kalyn,
I am so glad I found your wonderful, down to earth blog. Just when I need it most.
I can't stop wanting to eat and I feel out of control. Last year I had no trouble losing 10kg and I felt great.
Unfortunately my husband has just been diagnosed with dementia. I thought I was dealing with it OK as it is not as devastating a condition as Alzheimer.Do you think I'm using food to console myself?
I have always eaten healthy low GI
food and loads of fruit and veg and I feel your way of eating is just right for me but HOW do I get back on track?
Anonymous, it does sound like you have a lot to deal with, and I know emotional upsets can trigger stress eating in a lot of people. I don't really have the expertise to give this kind of dieting advice; I only know that once I had my mind made up to do it, the South Beach Diet worked for me. Good luck to you as you figure it out.
Hi Kalyn,
I recently came upon your site while searching for South Beach Diet recipes. I have tried a few, and they are delicious and easy to make. Today (although it's been a few years), I saw how you were featured in Women's World magazine. That must have been exciting for you. Congratulations. Women's World is one of my favorite magazines. They have such great articles. Just wanted to thank you for such a great site along with helpful information. I look forward to trying more of your recipes soon.
Julie
Thanks Julie. It was definitely exciting. Having a professional photo shoot was the most fun part (he made me smile so big my mouth ached, and I was sure the photos would look terrible, but they didn't.)
Glad you're enjoying the blog and the recipes!
