Gadget bloggers don't have to garnish.

We gadget bloggers have it easy. With a capital E. When my sister Kalyn asked me if I'd publish a few posts she had prepared (while she was off painting Washington D.C. blue), I agreed. I even asked her if she'd mind if I did a post or two. How hard can the cooking blog thing be, right? Wrong! This is HARD. I tip my wooden spoons to every last food blogger on the planet. You all deserve a vacation. You all deserve a foot massage. And you all deserve a month off from cooking, and from doing the dishes. Make that two months. Seriously.



First of all how do you decide what to cook? I wondered what I could whip up that wouldn't cause Kalyn's low carb server not to crash. Cross toast off the list. And what could I cook that won't make me look like a...well...a gadget blogger? Two hours. That's how long it took me decide on something. Add to that worrying about all kinds of things that would never even be on my radar and this cooking blog thing is about to swallow up my life. Here are some of the things I worried about: will the seeds that are popping out of the lemon as I squeeze it show up in the photo, or do I have to pick them out? Will all those knife marks in my cutting board show up or should I avoid the cutting board all together? Do I have to eat what I cook? And like it? If I don't have Cumin can I just toss in a little of something that starts with a "C" and call it good? And lastly, all day I was kicking myself for not paying better attention to the last few episodes of Top Chef. Note to self: never complain about writing a gadget blog again. Never. So what did I choose to cook?

Grilled Tofu Satay with Peanut Sauce.

I used extra firm organic Tofu. (I do live in Venice Beach after all.)

Here's what I marinated the tofu in:
Sesame oil
Soy sauce
Orange Juice
Brown sugar
Garlic
Curry Powder

And here's what I put in the peanut sauce:
Onion
Garlic
Olive oil
Chili flakes
Cilantro
Cumin (I actually found some. Probably from 1983)
Organic Peanut Butter
Lite coconut milk
Lemon juice (minus the seeds)
Soy sauce.

I'm sure I don't need to tell any of you how to put all this together, but just to prove I read Kalyn's blog and support all the talk about "eating local" as much as possible, I skewered the tofu with Lemon Grass stalks that I cut from my yard. Am I in the club? I should also admit that I just didn't feel like firing up the grill to grill the Tofu so I put them into my Panini maker. Worked like a charm.


Now if you'll excuse me I need to cleanse my palate so I'm off to write about a wireless receiver for streaming music files. I can't wait. But, before I do that I guess I should also admit that I also had dessert:

  14. Wow. Food bloggers/readers are so nice! Thanks so much for all the wonderful comments. I think the nicest thing a geek gadget reader ever said to me was "Dude, you don't totally suck." You've all made the blister I got from my panini maker totally worth it.

Now you can all see (1) my brother is a fantastic writer (he even gets paid big bucks for it) and (2) he's a wonderful and supportive brother, only one of the reasons why I love him so much.

    Rand, now you are an official food blogger. Feel free to come back and do guest posts any time you'd like!! And eat a big bowl of ice cream for me!

  20. I'm looking at the newest book, South Beach Diet Supercharged which says tofu, all varieties, 1/2 cup serving for phase one.

    This recipe wouldn't be phase one as written though with orange juice and brown sugar, and I did have that labeled incorrectly in the recipe archives so thanks for making me take another look at it. With orange juice and brown sugar, this would be phase three or phase 2 if you use Splenda or Agave instead of the brown sugar. You could easily make it phase one though by using Splenda and not using orange juice.

  24. I know this is an older post but I found this by chance through google a couple days ago. Just wondering what the measurements were for the ingredients. Hopefully you can help. If not I'll have to wing it! :-) I'm sure it'll be good as long as I taste along the way right??
