(Edit April 2012; this restaurant is no longer open.)
This is the last in a series of reports on restaurants where I ate when I visited Washington D.C. in May. I could say that I had saved the best for last, but it would not be completely true, as all the places I visited were wonderful, and actually I posted about the restaurants in the order I went to them. If you missed them, you can read the reviews of other restaurants I visited in D.C.

However, it would not be overstating it even a tiny bit to say that I was completely enchanted by Palette, the last restaurant I visited. The night I ate here everything was perfect from the service, the friendliness of the staff, the ambience, and of course the wonderful food. Every dish we sampled was perfectly prepared, beautifully presented, and completely delicious. It as one of those rare restaurant visits where you simply would not have wished for anything to be different. Even the prices were amazingly reasonably by Washington D.C. standards. The restaurant's name refers to seasonally changing art displays that make the setting as enticing at the food. Located in the Madison Hotel, Palette is more than worthy of being a destination itself.
The Palette Salad featured baby field greens, roasted olives, heirloom tomatoes, and a wonderfully flavorful balsamic vinaigrette. This was simply one of the best salads I've ever eaten in a restaurant.
Tia ordered the Asparagus Salad which had a quail egg on brioche, lambs lettuce and chervil dressing, and it also tasted incredible.
I ordered a dinner special, tempura fried Florida softshell crab served over steamed potatoes, broccoli rabe and tomatoes with saffron aioli. It was beautifully presented and delicious.
Tia chose Sun Dried Tomato Agnolloti, a pasta dish with cherry tomatoes, peas, baby squash, basil, and fresh mozarella. The freshness of the vegetables was remarkable, and this tasted incredible.
A charming Palette trademark is the tropical fruit flavored cotton candy which comes at the end of the meal. It is not difficult to see why there have been so many rave reviews for Palette. If you have a chance to visit Washington D.C. be sure not to miss the experience of dining here.Palette Restaurant and Bar

Nerissa, I will get on it!!
Mae, me too. I had a fantastic soft shell crab salad once at Commander's Palace in New Orleans that was especially memorable. This one was great too.
presentation is wonderful as well as I'm sure the food was as wonderful. Soft shell crab's when they are good they are to die for - when bad yuk!!! Great piece you did on D C Kalyn.

Hi Kalyn
It's all so lovely :)

argh, i do miss D.C. I'm glad to hear that you had a tasty time! we should get together soon and dish about it.
Kalyn, I just stumbled upon your site in search of pesto recipes and was delighted to see your review of Palette from your visit to DC. I have been meaning to have dinner there but so far have only managed to have business meetings over drinks. The service and cocktails are always fabulous! I run a nightlife planning service (www.GoingOutTonightDC.com) and your review is a big help. Poste Brasserie is another to try.
