It's called The 2996 Project for the 2996 people who lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center and other terrorist acts on September 11, 2001. It's a great idea and although I wasn't really planning on blogging about 9-11, when I heard about this I thought it deserved a mention. Here's how creator D.C. Roe describes it:
The 2,996 Project is a tribute to the victims of 9/11.
On September 11, 2006, 2,996 volunteer bloggers
will join together for a tribute to the victims of 9/11.
Each person will pay tribute to a single victim.
We will honor them by remembering their lives,
and not by remembering their murderers.
If you want to spend some time today remembering the victims of 9-11, The 2996 Project is a great site to visit. Here is a direct link to the list of names and the tributes.
(I heard about this great project from a post on Blogher by Mir, who writes for Blogher and for her blog, Woulda Coulda Shoulda.)

most unfortunately, the link to 2996 project is down. Apparently too much traffic for the host to handle. Sad.
In order to read some of the tributes, I had to resort to searching blogger for 2996 - which is how I hit upon YOUR site. for any other readers, I pray that they can find these tributes and read some of them. The are just amazing.
I guess the creators of the site underestimated the appeal this idea would have. If you're intereted,do what Linda did and google 2996.
There have been problems with the main site - something to do with "bandwidth" - can't imagine why. http://www.madmommajen.com/ has been set up as a temporary site to get us through this crunch time - a more permanent solution will be coming later. http://reflections-from-the-pond.blogspot.com/
There is a blogroll on my page as well - not a complete list by any means.
I think that is a beautiful memorial to a tragic event. And you're absolutely right, instead of paying attention to the war on terror and those who caused such a horrific event, we should remember those who lost their lives.
Promoting love, not hate. Now if only our media would do the same. (Not sure what kind of coverage you're getting in the US, but Australian tv news is being awful about the anniversary)
Ellie, I refuse to even watch the news on this day. I've been so disappointed with how the U.S. government has used the fear of terrorism for political gains.
Ponder, thanks for steering people to the temporary sites.
