Weekend Herb Blogging #72 Recap
The Seasons are Changing?

I can hardly believe it myself, but here we are at Weekend Herb Blogging #72. The way the entries were pouring in this weekend, I'm thankful I decided a long time ago that I wouldn't do pictures when I'm hosting. This way you'll have to visit the blogs to see the photos! And since my usual lovely green headings were somehow eaten by Blogger last time (read the comments; I never did find out what happened) I guess I will forego those too. I hope what I'm writing is interesting enough to make up for the lack of visual stimulation.

Before we get to describing the food this week, I want to send a hearty "Congratulations" to the talented and lovely Anna of Morsels and Musings. Anna and Jonas are getting married this weekend, actually they will officially be married by the time you read this. The newlywed Anna will be the host of WHB next weekend, so everyone send her some good wishes! (And I do think that getting married is a pretty good reason to miss herb blogging for one weekend, don't you agree?)

First this week is Pookah from What's Cooking in Carolina who actually posted early for last week, but her entry got lost somewhere in cyberspace so we're moving it over. Pookah wrote about Achiote or Annato seeds, and tells how she made Achiote Chicken with Black Beans, Mango Salsa, and Lime Creme Fraiche.

This was the first I had heard of a dish called Kootu, and the Beans Kootu featured by Anisha of Kovai-Samayal sounded delish. If you don't know what Kootu is, visit Anisha and she will enlighten you.

I will be forever grateful for Katerina from Daily Unadventures in Cooking who has cured me of my inability to comment by teaching me the trick of opening in a new window when the comment window won't open properly. Thanks Katerina! This week she is sharing a meaty Rosemary Ragu, which sounds like a perfect topping for pasta and a great way to cheer someone up!

Sue from Coffee and Cornbread wishes she had flat parsley for her delicious looking Smoked Sausage and White Bean Soup, but her store insists on getting the curly type. When you see the photo though, you'll realize that the soup has not suffered at all, it looks wonderful.

More lovely photos at Blue Kitchen, where Terry has created a delightful sounding combination with Rosemary Apricots. Terry says this is simple French cooking at it's best, and it sure looks good!

Next, a blogger I've actually met, the very lovely Nupur from One Hot Stove. Nupur has tried cooking with candied ginger for the first time this week, and created a lovely and delicious looking Ginger Pear Saffron Cake.

North Carolina, U.S.A.
Garlic is the featured ingredient of Asha from Aroma, and she's using it in a traditional southern dish. If you haven't had Hoppin' John, or black-eyed peas with rice, you must take a peek at her recipe.

Next is The Culinary Chase who has a delightful looking version of Rosemary Scones. Somehow she manages to get them to split open perfectly, readdy to be served with rosemary butter.

India
A very interesting dish with a lot of family tradition is the submission this week from Sra from When My Soup Came Alive. She jokingly calls it Chilli of the Valley, but think of Fried Stuffed Chillies and you'll get the idea of this tasty dish.

Next, from a blog with the interesting name Yumminess Ensues, Palocavore shares some more family memories and a post about making Dill Pickles. (This was also a tradition in my own family, but I confess I've never made them, so I'm impressed!)

Something that sounds like a very interesting combination of flavors comes next, the Chicken Curry with Green Apple and Coconut Chutney from Toni at Daily Bread Journal. There is some very interesting discussion about how this dish came to be created, so don't miss it.

Next is Gattina from Kitchen Unplugged, who has made very impressive looking Home-made Orchiette with Cannelinni, Tuna, and Dill. Gattina says she is not satisfied with the shape, but if you read her comments you'll see that everyone thinks they look delicious.

Ramya is taking a break from blogging events, but she sends us one last entry from Cascading Flavours. Herby Green Muffins are an interesting blend of cultures and flavors, as Ramya combines Indian herbs with a sour cream muffin.

I have never grown tarragon, but Sher from What Did You Eat has convinced me to try. I think her Rice Salad with Paprika Shrimp and Tarragon looks like a very good reason why I need to add this herb to my garden.

Heart of the Vendee, France
Katie from Thyme for Cooking is writing about persillade this week, which she says is the garlic and parsley mixture that makes escargot taste so great. She combines this herb mixture with lamb to create yummy sounding Baked Lamb Chops with Persillade.

Next up is a delightfully informative post about lemongrass from Tigerfish of the charming blog Teczcape. I haven't cooked with lemongrass that much, but her recipe for Thai Style Hot and Spicy Fried Tofu with Lemongrass looks tempting.

Colchester, Essex, U.K.
Freya and Paul of Writing at the Kitchen Table are expanding their cauliflower horizons, and this week they've created a very fabulous sounding Deep Fried Cauliflower with Mustard Dip. Freya says it's actually healthy too, compared to some of the cheese drenched cauliflower preparations out there; go and see for yourself.

A dish that really caught my eye was this next one, Coriander-Tomato Chutney, posted by Barghavi of the Blog Maa Inti Vanta. There is also some good information about coriander seeds and leaves in this delightful post.

Pistoia, Tuscany, Italy
Next my good friend Ilva from Lucullian Delights who I'm going to visit in Italy someday. (She might think I'm kidding, but one day I will e-mail her and say I'm coming, where can I sleep?) Ilva says she was thinking of me a little when she created her dish of White Beans and Sausage with Sage or Fagioli All'Ucceletto. As always, there are simply beautiful photos of the herb and the finished creation, and Ilva's right, I'd love this dish!

Anh from Food Lover's Journey is really enticing me this week with her recipe which combines coriander leaves, stems, and roots in a paste with pepper and garlic. Then this flavorful paste is used to marinate chicken, resulting in Grilled Chicken with Peppers, Garlic, and Coriander. I love everything about this recipe.

Welcome to Joanna from Joanna's Food, who's not only one of the many new herb bloggers this weekend, but also participating in her very first blog event. She's featuring sorrel, a plant I discovered and loved last summer. Joanna gives some ideas for growing sorrel and shares how she combined Roast Chicken and Sorrel for a great dinner.

Normally Ruth from Once Upon a Feast shares recipes with us, but this week she's spotlighting one of her other blogs, Ask Ruth, where she responds to questions to readers. I'm guessing you might learn something new from Ruth's post about Freezing and Drying Herbs.

We're getting a double dose of great information in the next post from Astrid at Paulchen's Food Blog. Astrid talked about lime for her WHB recipe of Lime Chicken Wings and Carrot-Garlic Rice, but when I didn't know what curcuma was (also called turmeric) she also added some interesting information about it too.

Pat L. of Up a Creek without a PatL loves to roast brussels sprouts, and after doing it for a while she discovered she loved the roasted outer leaves, which got a bit crisp. Now she purposesly makes Crispy Roasted Brussel Sprout Leaves, and her husband has learned to like them.

Spring has arrived in Northern Germany, and I'm more than a little jealous. Check out the beautiful spring flowers Ulrike has posted at Kuchenlatein if you want proof.

I always see inviting food when I visit Burcu at Almost Turkish Recipes. This week she is featuring Borek, a type of Turkish phyllo pastry stuffed with different fillings, and her two types of Puff Pastry Bundles look very tempting.

There are three great-looking recipes in this next entry, which comes from Helen of News From the Kitchen. If you're a fan of fennel, zucchini, eggplant, coriander, or parsley, you'll find something that looks tasty in her selection of Vegetable Tapas with Herbs.

Avon, U.K.Although her blog is called A Spoonful of Sugar and she loves to create sweets, Angela is featuring Butternut and Chorizo Linguine with Sage for her first time participating in Weekend Herb Blogging. (WhenI read this post, I actually got up from the computer and went outside to see if my sage plant was peeking out through the snow, but no luck.) Angela is going to plant some sage of her own too.

Fragrant and delicious basil is the featured plant of Chris (Pebbles) from Mele Cotte. She made pesto, then used it to create Basil Pesto Pizza and Pizza Pockets. (Nothing makes me long for summer more than thinking about basil!)

Next up is an ingredient that I haven't tried, and you know how I love hearing about new things! Emily from Superspark is featuring celeriac, or celery root. Her way of preparing it, Fried Celery Root or Sedano Fritto, sounds like it would taste great.

Once again the amazing Haalo of Cook (almost) Anything At Least Once has found a new ingredient and photographed it beautifully. I'm quite sure this is the first time someone has written about fresh pistachios, and if you've never seen them like me, head over to Haalo's and take a look.

Next up is Zorra at Kochtopf, who had the great event for World Bread Day. She says that spring has arrived in Spain, and to prove it she is sharing some lovely spring flowers. (I am trying not to feel too envious.)

Every time I host WHB I'm reminded how many talented cooks there are around the world, and another wonderfully creative one is Virginia from the vegan blog Absolutely Green. This time she has made lovely-looking Quinoa and Orange Conches, which are conch shaped biscuits with orange and quinoa. (Click the English translation if your French is not up to par!)

If you want to impress me, make some sushi! That's what Glenna did over at A Fridge Full of Food. She's featuring the type of sea algae called Nori or porphyra in her post on Step-by-Step Sushi Rolling.

I'm so excited to have an entry from The Blog That Ate Manhattan, a long-time favorite of mine for the women's health information as well as the food. So suitable that this is an entry that combines health and food too, talking about the healthful benefits of chamomile, and sharing a great sounding recipe for Chamomile Tea Squares.

It's been a long time since we have heard from Strata of My Bay Area Garden, but she has been gardening all this time, and I'm feeling more spring envy seeing the lovely chard growing in her amazing veggie garden. Strata has also discovered a new way to cook chard, which I think sounds delicious.

Another new herb blogger is Lila from Bliss Defined, who has one of the best "about" pages I've seen! She's posting about The Easiest Salad in the World, using black beans, corn and cilantro, and you guessed it, she got my attention with the cilantro.

It's about a week now until we find out whetherChef Melissa from Cooking Diva will win her second Bloggie for best Latin American Blog, but huge congrats to her on being nominated again. Visit her blog and check out this fantastic post about Red Hibiscus Tea Pops with Yogurt, and you'll see how talented she is.

A delightful entry at a blog with a delightful name, Food Blogga. Susan has just had her first taste of kumquats, and is reminiscing about other firsts. The dish she created of Pan Seared Sea Scallops with Kumquats looks wonderful.

Finally, my own entry. It's cold and there's still a lot of snow here in Salt Lake, but the stores have fresh asparagus on sale, so as a sign of spring (coming soon, hopefully!) I posted about Roasted Asparagus with Garlic. This is a great recipe if I do say so myself, so give it a try.

I continue to be so impressed every week with the interesting and diverse entries for this event. I think the fact that people send things from all over the world helps keep it so there's always something new. (Sometimes I worry that my own entries are boring in comparison, but maybe my things are unusual for someone out of the U.S. in the way theirs are for me. I hope so!)

Even if I enjoy the idea of a travelling WHB, as everyone creates its own way to make a roundup, each time you host, it smells something cosy like home.
