Double-Dill Homemade Tartar Sauce finished sauce with fish

Before I talk about my Homemade Tartar Sauce (with Double Dill), let me ask, how do you feel about tartar sauce? I’m sure some food snobs might consider it to be boring or ordinary. But I absolutely love it on fish, and I always ask for tartar sauce in a restaurant when I’m having fish.

However, most tartar sauce you buy in a jar is not that great. And purchased tartar sauce often has sugar, so it’s not diet friendly for anyone who’s watching carbs. And I’m always trying to eat more fish, so I had to create a homemade tartar sauce recipe that didn’t have sugar and was loaded with flavor.

It took a bit of experimenting, but this recipe for the sauce I now make regularly combines Greek Yogurt (or sour cream), mayo, dill weed, capers, and dill pickle relish or chopped dill pickles. And this homemade tartar sauce recipe makes the most delicious tartar sauce I’ve ever tried! I think my sauce tastes great on most any kind of fish, and if you like tartar sauce, I bet you’ll end up loving this recipe! I hope you try it soon when you have fish on the menu.

Is Greek Yogurt a must for the homemade tartar sauce recipe?

I did love this homemade tartar sauce with the slight tangy flavor notes from plain Greek Yogurt. But you can also make it with sour cream if you prefer. You can use full-fat or low-fat dairy, whichever fits with your way of eating.

Can you make homemade tartar sauce without a food processor?

Using a food processor makes it easy to whip up the double dill tartar sauce, but if you don’t have one you can definitely mix the ingredients in a bowl.

How low in carbs is this homemade tartar sauce recipe?

This tartar sauce that’s loaded with dill flavor has only 1 net carb in a serving!

How to make Homemade Tartar Sauce:

(This is only a summary of the steps for the recipe; please scroll down for complete printable recipe. Or if you use the JUMP TO RECIPE link at the top of the page, it will take you directly to the complete recipe.)

  1. You’ll need Greek yogurt (or sour cream), mayo, chopped capers, dill pickle relish or dill pickles, and dill weed.
  2. I originally made this with a spice blend called Bon Appetit, but now that’s no longer available so I use Beau Monde Seasoning (affiliate link).
  3. Measure out Greek yogurt (or sour cream) and mayo.
  4. Add chopped capers, dill pickle relish (or chopped dill pickles), dill weed, and Beau Monde Seasoning.
  5. You can whisk this together in a bowl or use a food processor. But I blended the ingredients in the bowl attachment of my Immersion Blender (affiliate link).
  6. The finished  tartar sauce should be somewhat chunky, and have a strong dill flavor with a bit of tang from the yogurt and a little creaminess from the mayo.
  7. Keep the extra tartar sauce refrigerated if you don’t eat it all!

Homemade Tartar Sauce (with Double Dill)

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

This Double-Dill Homemade Tartar Sauce recipe is low in carbs and gluten-free! And I'd always make some tartar sauce whenever I'm cooking any type of fish!.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup plain Greek Yogurt (see notes)
  • 1/3 cup mayo (see notes)
  • 1/2 tsp. dill weed (dried dill)
  • 2 T capers, drained and finely chopped
  • 3 T dill pickle relish (see notes)
  • 1/2 tsp. Beau Monde Seasoning

Instructions

  1. You can whisk this together in a bowl or use the bowl attachment of an Immersion Blender (affiliate link) like I did, but don’t over-process if you use the immersion blender.
  2. Measure out the Greek yogurt (or sour cream) and mayo and whisk together or blend.
  3. Add the dried dill weed, chopped capers, dill pickle relish (or chopped pickles) and Beau Monde Seasoning (affiliate link) (affiliate link).
  1. Whisk or blend to combine. Mixture should be chunky.
  2. Refrigerate for a few hours before using for best flavor.
  3. This tartar sauce will keep in the refrigerator for a few weeks.

Notes

Use sour cream instead of Greek Yogurt for a slightly less tangy sauce if you prefer.

You can use full-fat or reduced-fat Greek yogurt or sour cream, but higher-fat products will usually have fewer carbs. Use full-fat or light mayo, but full-fat mayo will have fewer carbs.

Be sure to use dill pickle relish without sugar (or use finely chopped dill pickles if you prefer; I love to use my favorite dill pickles for this recipe.)

This makes 1 1/4 cups tartar sauce; serving size for nutritional information is two tablespoons.

Low-Carb Diet / Low-Glycemic Diet / South Beach Diet Suggestions:
This Homemade Tartar Sauce recipe is a super low-carb version of tartar sauce, and low-carb or Keto dieters would love this made with full-fat Greek Yogurt (or sour cream) and full-fat mayo. If you prefer less fat, be careful not to choose a reduced fat Greek yogurt or reduced fat mayo that has added sugar. With the right reduced-fat Greek Yogurt and mayo without added sugar, this could work for the original South Beach Diet.
