Friday Night Photos: House Renovations v.2.0.8 (A floor and walls framed!)
Last time we checked in on the house renovations, there was just a glimpse of a floor-to-come, and now as you see, the floor joists are done (and I’m still showing off that word, which I just learned!) The progress is getting exciting, and if you use your imagination, you can visualize sitting in the new room cranking out a blog post.
This space in the floor is where I’ll have a trap-door covering steps that go down to the greatly-improved basement. The contractors are working on extending the steps there up to meet the new floor. This area will be kind of a mud room, leading out to the deck.
Almost before I knew it, a layer of wood was nailed over the floor joists, and I had a floor. This was definitely fun to come home to!
Then very soon there was actual framing going on and walls started to appear. This wall faces east and there will be windows where the morning and mid-day sun will come into the room, hopefully making light that’s great for photos.
Here’s another view of the east wall, with Spencer my fabulous contractor working on something. The board here spanning three sections is where the three tall windows are going to be.
Then very quickly more walls were framed in, and it was starting to look like something that would turn into a room. This photo looks at the south side of the new addition, and the upper boards going horizontally show where two big windows will be on this side.
Finally, to the west of the new rooms will be a covered deck, and you can see that space on the left in this photo, (where Spencer’s son is hard at work cutting boards to size.) There’s also going to be a lower level deck that goes all the way across the back, and next to that piece of deck will be two raised beds where I’ll (hopefully!) be growing tomatoes later this summer.

Exciting! We put in hardwood floors last year, only to come up short 1 room’s worth of flooring (my ‘office’/the guestroom, the least used room in the house). We FINALLY found the same scraped bamboo flooring and that last room is finally getting its flooring TODAY!
We are also on the brink of a kitchen remodel, so we’re stopping in Phoenix tomorrow to look at slabs for countertops.
SO not bored by the photos, it’s actually a great reminder to take a bunch of before photos of my kitchen since we didn’t do a bunch of the rest of the house. 😀
Three tall windows !!!!! Light!!!! That is going to be just a gorgeous space!
Now it probably seems really BIG, then it will seem small and then big again. . . . it just does that. I LOVE progress like this!
Oh, Kalyn – you can finally see it all taking shape. I know how excited you must be!
I’m so happy for you, Kalyn!
Elkit, absolutely (and there will be a real-life party too for those who are closer!)
Wanda, maybe in a month or so! It has been fun to walk around on the sub-floor (see I’m using the new words I’m learning) and imagine how it will look. And Wanda, you are invited to the real party of course! Hopefully early June!
Looking great…..I think it would be fun for you to do a before (or during) and after photo……bring a chair and a small desk out on the new section floor, sit at it while working at something, then another photo at the same spot later when its all finished.
Love that new construction!
Cheers,
Wanda
It looks and sounds fantastic! Your house-warming party is going to be online too, and we’re all invited, right? 🙂
I’m so happy the blog readers are not bored with this series of contruction-in-progress photos. I admit, I’m doing it mostly for myself because after I renovated the inside of the house (pre-digital camera days) I regretted so much that I didn’t have more photos. I think the contractors are enjoying it too.
Paz, I am constantly amazed at how little I knew about this.
Maria, thanks. Someday we can have lunch on that deck!
Daniel, I am excited, no doubt!
PQ, I’ll have a guest room if you ever come to Salt Lake!
May, thanks so much for sharing! Very interesting learning more about this. I love that show but actually haen’t watched TV for years (see, “why I need to retired.”)
Kellypea, thanks. It is a great feeling!
How exciting for you! I love seeing something new coming from construction — so gratifying.
If you’re interested in adding to your new vocabulary, the plywood fastened down to the floor joists is the “subfloor,” and the wide boards above where the windows are going are the “headers.” (I watch a lot of “This Old House” on PBS!!)
I’m loving the renovation series. Exciting!!
Looks good, Kalyn! Can’t wait to see it when it’s finished.
It must be truly exciting to see things start to take shape with your renovations. Good luck and please keep sharing with your readers!

I love checking in on the house!! Glad it is still coming along! Have a great weekend!
Fascinating to see how much work goes into the process.
