Friday Night Photos: House Renovations v. 2.1.4 (Desk, Photo Corner, Tool Cupboard, and Deck!)
You can see from this photo that my house is still very much a construction zone, but there’s some real progress happening too. In the last set of photos we talked about bookcases, a double pantry, and window trim. Now you can see a desk, photo corner, and tool cupboard coming together inside the new addition, and outside the covered deck is starting to take shape. Above, amid the construction mess, is a photo area that runs along the east wall of my office.
Here’s a wider view of the photo area. The shelves underneath will hold placemats, silverware, and other photo props, and where there are no shelves I’ll have a small refrigerator that I’m bringing home from school. This corner has east and south light, so I may take photos right on the top of this counter sometimes, but there will also be a high table under the south windows.
This is the frame for my built in desk (with a piece of wood protecting the center bracket.) There’ll be drawer sets on each end of the desk, with a formica countertop, and the same formica material continuing along the photo counter.
None of these photos are great, but this was especially hard to get a good picture of. It’s a cupboard built into the end of the mud room where I’ll store garden tools and other garden materials. My house doesn’t have a garage, so I’ll love having this storage area for garden stuff.
The office area will have a sofa-bed so I can use it as a guestroom, and the pocket door is now installed making it so that room can have the door closed for privacy. You’re be looking down this hall from my kitchen, with shelves on the right for blog dishes, and double pantries on the left.
This photo shows why I love my contractors so much! This is a weed barrier under where the covered deck is going to be. Since I’ve lived for years with a front porch that always had weeds growing out from under it, I’m loving this attention to detail!
Looking out the west side door, you can see how the covered deck is getting framed. On top of this frame will be Trex decking that’s the same gray color as I used for my front porch.
Finally, another view of the framing for the covered deck, although the west sun was really making it hard to get a picture of this. I know I’ll spend hours sitting out on this sheltered deck, cooking on the barbecue, and having dinners with friends.

Cynthia, that’s not my kitchen. The photo corner is going in a new room that’s an office/photo studio, down the hall from my kitchen. Definitely planning it with an eye to blogging though.
I love that your kitchen is going to be purpose built with “photo corner” etc.
Maris, thanks. There’s actually no architect. The contractors and I are designing it as we go, mostly them, I’m just telling them what I want!
This is going to look unbelievable! You (and your architects :)) must have a serious eye for design!
Trig, I have a blogging office set up in my dining room right now. But I have to say, it hasn’t been easy!
How do you keep blogging with all this going on? I couldn’t do it.
Pearl, so excited here!
Carolyn, I’m marking off the days on both counts! I think it will be harder to have it not done when I’m home, but maybe I’ll be happy to be home that I won’t care as much, who knows? Whatever, I am not complaining!
You must be counting the days, right, until the last day of school? Once that happens you’ll probably be even more anxious for the renovation to be completed! It’s coming along, though.
oh kalyn – everything is coming together SO nicely! i love seeing the progress! i’m getting excited thinking about the end result! so close!
Thanks everyone!! I’m trying so hard to focus on the end result and ignore the mess, which is getting harder the longer it takes. And (I need to say this often) I feel so blessed and lucky to be able to create this space and then retire and enjoy it. So no complaining, that’s my motto!
I’m so envious of the space dedicated for blog stuff and food photography. Wow. And the porch. Shelves. All wonderful. All this and your last year teaching is dwindling down to the final day. Go you!
Your house is looking SO good! Yahoo!
Woweee! So exciting. You’re going to love having a room completely reserved for all things blogging and recipes. It’s the best thing in my house (my office), and best for my marriage to have it all tucked into one spot! Fun to see it coming along so nicely!
This is going to be beautiful and so useful. It’s looking great!
I am officially jealous! What a wonderful space you’ve designed. The porch will be fantastic when it’s done and you can sit outside and look at the garden.
Love that you will have a space dedicated to your blog. I am spread out all over the place.
One can see the beginning of the end now, it must feel great Kalyn! It will be so nice you won’t leave the house anymore.
Heaven is under-construction!!!
Ooooo, ahhhhh . . . things are looking great and I am loving that covered porch.
