Five Fun Things on Friday (11-20-09)

Fuyu PersimmonsOn Friday nights I sometimes share fun things from the week, and if you've kept up on the blog, you already know about what's in the box in the photo above. Keep reading to hear more about the other fun things, and if you've been having any fun this week, do share about it in the comments!

Fun Thing #1: Persimmons Came in the Mail!
It started as one of those promises on Twitter that you're never sure the person will actually remember, but Andrea from Rookie Cookery kept her promise and sent me an enormous box of Fuyu persimmons this week. The most fun of all has been discovering how much I love persimmons, who knew? I've been experimenting with recipes like mad, and have already posted Whole Wheat Couscous Salad with Persimmon, Grapes, Green Onion, Mint, and Pine Nuts. More persimmon recipes coming soon, including a salad with black beans, persimmons, and avocado! If you have good ideas for using persimmons, please leave them in the comments.

Fun Thing #2: Pumpkin Recipes!
This actually happened last week, but I forgot to talk about how my recipe for Low-Sugar Pumpkin and Apple Crumble with Cranberries was included in a story about pumpkin recipes from top food bloggers at Lifescript. Want to see the recipes we shared? This Slideshow of Pumpkin Recipe Photos is pretty fun. Most fun of all though, was how many of the other bloggers were virtual or real-life friends.

Fun Thing #3: Holiday Photo Project at Chookooloonks

Last summer at BlogHer I finally got to meet the beautiful-inside-and-out Karen Walrond from Chookooloonks, and this week she announced a holiday photo project that I'm proud to be participating in. The idea is so simple. Pick out any photo you've taken that you like, print it, send it to her, and she'll share it with one of the kids who have to spend Christmas at Texas Children's Hospital. It will help to make their holiday a little brighter, and you'll get good karma galore! Read the full details of how to be part of this lovely idea at Chookooloonks.

Fun Thing #4: 9 Life Lessons I've Learned from Blogging
The title says it all, so I can only add that I found out about 9 Life Lessons I've Learned from Blogging on Twitter, and while all these lessons resonate with me, my personal favorite is number 5. (You'll have to go read the post to see what number 5 is, then come back and let me know which of the lessons is your personal favorite.)

Fun Thing #5: Possibly, The. Best. Carrot. Recipe. Ever.
I say possibly because I haven't tried My Favorite Carrots that I found at Cheat Day Cafe, but I'm totally charmed by the sound of carrots with mayo, onion, horseradish, and cheddar cheese. Melody uses bread crumbs, but I'm pretty sure I'd skip those. Cooked carrots are way on the bottom of my list, but this is a recipe I'm definitely going to try.

Once again, these are five really fun things. Thanks for combing the interweb to find these gems.

A friend of mine, who is a wonderful cook, makes a similar carrot dish. She cuts her own matchstick carrots and bakes them in horseradish sauce. No need for cheese and crumbs and they are delicious.

#5 is my favorite life lesson too. :-)

Lydia, you're welcome. It's fun saving things!

Janet, that sounds wonderful. Can you get us the recipe for your friend's carrots?

Elkit, isn't that just so true?

Well, I like #5 very much, and agree wholeheartedly, but I like #9 a lot, too. So often, we will rely on what we perceive others think about us, when in reality they're not thinking about us at all, but about themselves..... just like we are! Better to not worry about what others think & be more concerned about whether we're happy with ourselves. That's what I'm working on. But don't get me wrong; my dear friends are so very important to me, and I know I am to them as well. Couldn't live without them!

Jay, I agree #9 is also great. It reminds me of a great book called "Rules for Aging." Rule #1 It doesn't matter, and Rule #2 Nobody is thinking about you!

Hello Kalyn, I am one of your loyal followers. I live in Northern Alberta, Canada. I have to tell you that your blog site has been an inspiration for me. I love to cook, I am a devotee of the South Beach lifestyle in my kitchen - but you are such a creative cook. My background is British and I still log on to many of the sites there, mostly for fun and sharing. I would love to know how to blog...Laureen

Lauren, thanks for the nice words. It's always fun hearing from a loyal reader. You might see if there is an adult education class in your area about blogging if you're serious about it. Or Google "How to start a blog" and there will be lots of info. There is a lot to learn, but it can be fun!
