Five Fun Things on Friday (12-4-09)

I think doing good things for others can be a lot of fun, so this week for fun things we have three wonderful programs where bloggers are raising money to help those in need, a great post about making better breakfast choices, and then some exciting news about something during the holiday season that involves the queen of daytime TV and Kalyn's Kitchen. (Be sure you read to the very end so you don't miss the exciting news!)

Fun Thing #1: It's Almost Time for A Menu for Hope!
This Christmas marks six years of A Menu for Hope, an annual fundraising effort coordinated by Pim from Chez Pim. I've participated in this for the last five years, and this year I'll be donating the same prize I gave last year (but don't tell anyone because I don't think I'm supposed to announce the prize until December 14.) If you don't know about A Menu for Hope, starting December 14 food bloggers will offer prizes. You can buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a certain prize, and all money raised goes to the U.N World Food Program. Read more about A Menu for Hope at Chez Pim, then be sure to check out the prizes on December 14.

Fun Thing #2: The Blogger Aid Cookbook
You can also help by buying the Blogger Aid Cookbook, a collection of recipes by 60 food bloggers from around the world, with 100% of profits going to the School Meals Program (a part of the U.N. World Food Program.) Read more about Blogger Aid at More Than Burnt Toast.

Fun Thing #3: Passports with a Purpose
Passports with a Purpose is organized by my friend Pam from Nerd's Eye View, who had banded together with her fellow travel bloggers to raise money, this year to help build a school in Cambodia. The idea is familiar, spend $10 to buy raffle tickets and then bid on prizes, but many of these prizes are aimed at travelers rather than food lovers. Read more about Passports with a Purpose at Nerd's Eye View, and visit the Passports with a Purpose Site to see the prizes and make a donation.

Fun Thing #4: Five Easy Breakfast Upgrates
You know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, don't you? If your breakfast habits aren't quite up to par, check out Five Easy Breakfast Upgrades from Happy Healthy Life. This post just might make you re-think your breakfast habits.

Fun Thing #5: Oprah!
Okay, I did sneak in a little mention of this when I posted the Flourless, Sugar-Free Pistachio Cookies, but in case you missed it, Kalyn's Kitchen is one of four food blogs that have been chosen to be Holiday Bloggers on Oprah.com! That means that recipes posted here will be featured as part of Oprah's Holiday 2009, and yes, I'm quite excited. Plus this will probably make me work extra hard thinking of good ideas for Christmas recipes, which has to be a very good thing as well! (Edit: Where are my manners? I was so excited last night I forgot to tell you that the other bloggers being featured at Oprah.com are Kath from Kath Eats, Stephanie from A Year of Slow Cooking, and Shauna from Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef. Go team!)
