Five Fun Things on Friday (1-15-10)

Strawberry Spinach SaladIt's time for another Friday night collection of fun things, and this week one of the Fun Friday things has something to do with this spinach salad recipe I got from a reader named Robin back in July. Of course, it's not exactly strawberry season in January, but keep reading to see how strawberries just bacame a lot more fun, especially if you have an iPhone.

Fun Thing #1: An App for Strawberry Recipes
Many months ago I heard from a representative of the California Strawberry Commission. Seems they were making an iPhone App of strawberry recipes, and they wanted to know if they could include my recipe for Strawberry Spinach Salad with Almonds and Dill. Of course I said yes, and this week the Strawberry iPhone App was unveiled. It's already been called Unusual App of the Day and Mouthwatering, and was announced on MacsimmumNews. The Strawberry App is free, but apprently some people consider a Strawberries Recipe App to be App Overload, even when the recipes are reportedly from "some of the top food bloggers and chefs around the world." (I don't have an iPhone, sigh, so I can't see who the other bloggers are.)

Fun Thing #2: The Secret to Looking Young from a Dermatologist
I loved this post about The Secret to Looking Young. Click that link immediately and read the secret. Especially if you're a woman, I guarantee this will make you smile.

Fun Thing #3: The Perfect Reply to Unwanted PR Pitches

As blogging becomes more widely recognized as a way to build "buzz" around products, the volume of PR pitches to successful bloggers has increased steadily. Every blogger I know is bugged by unwanted pitches on a daily basis, but now The Bloggess has the perfect reply to unwanted PR pitches. (This post has a swear word alert, but if you're a blogger I guarantee it will make you laugh. Also it looks like some of the companies who sent the worst pitches have now apologized and promised to do better, which is also a fun thing.)

Fun Thing #4: BlogHer's Most-Loved Posts of 2009
Many of you know that I also write about food at a site called BlogHer.com. This week BlogHer editor Rita Arens rounded up The BlogHer Community's Most Loved Posts of 2009, and I was thrilled that two of my food posts made the cut. There is a lot of very good writing here, so pull up a chair and see what the BlogHer contributing editors had on their minds this past year.

Fun Thing #5: Skills Everyone Should Master
Might Girl started working in 2008 on this gender-neutral list of 100 Skills Everyone Should Master, and it's a good one. There are some good links for guidance too, in case you haven't mastered a few of the skills yet.

So those are my fun things for this Friday. And because every week should have room for a little more fun, I'd love to hear in the comments about any fun things you cam across during the week  If you need just a little more Friday Fun, you can use the label for Five Fun Things on Friday to see fun things I've shared on other Fridays!

  2. Morning :) I can't think when last I got so much pleasure from a list of links - thanks so much for collating these! The unsolicited marketing e-mail reply really did have me in stitches - I think I am going to use her Paypal line in future. Am still ticking items off the 100 skills list - and am heading for the shoe department right after breakfast! Have a lovely weekend :)

  3. Fun, indeed! Looks like there will be an App for everything soon - maybe even one that minimizes unwanted PR pitches! :-) (You should look into an iPhone. I don't have one either, but I've got some serious touch screen envy!)

  4. Jen, isn't that a good one! More shoes for me, please.

Jeanne, thanks so much. Some weeks there just seems to be an abundance of interesting things out there. (Other weeks, not so much!) And yes, go to the shoe department.)

TW, serious envy here too, although I think I might go for a Blackberry instead of an iPhone when I take the plunge. It's going to be soon for me though.

  7. I also loved the post on skils everyone needs. I see there are a few I need to work on. Just generally glad people are finding this interesting, because when I spot these things, I'm never sure if others will find them as interesting as I do!

Thanks for joining the conversation! I love hearing from readers and even though I can't always reply to every comment, I will always answer specific questions on a recipe as soon as possible. Sometimes I'm answering by iPhone, so my replies may be short!

Comments don't appear on the blog until they're approved by me, so no need to try again if you don't see it! Feel free make your signature a link to your site if you're a blogger, but links posted within the body of the comment will never be published.
