Friday Night Photos: Shrimp for the Superbowl (and Not Just for Saints Fans)

Spicy Shrimp and Cucumber SaladMy brother Mark and his wife Lisa have hosted the Denny Family Superbowl party for many years. This year they have a new theater room with an enormous TV, so I'm guessing for those who plan to watch the game the party will be better than ever. Mark bravely posted a message on our family blog reminding people that some family members are trying to eat healthy foods. That got me thinking about shrimp recipes, since our family loves shrimp and at least some of us are cheering for New Orleans, where shrimp is a frequent menu item. The top photo is Spicy Shrimp and Cucumber Salad with Mint, Lemon, and Cumin. If that seems too healthful for Superbowl fare, go ahead and eat it with a side of spicy wings or meatballs! Now here are some more shrimp loving menu options, no matter which team you're cheering for!

More to Chew On:

  1. I always appreciate some healthy dishes alongside the standard Super Bowl fare. But hey, just because it's healthy doesn't mean it's not full of flavor. And your dishes always full under the "full of flavor" category!

  2. So many wonderful ideas in this post! Would an all-shrimp menu for the Super Bowl be such a bad idea??? Really, one of the things I love about shrimp is that, because there are no fresh shrimp in my part of the world, there are many options for good frozen shrimp that I can keep on hand.

  3. Oh, so wonderful ideas for shrimp! Thank you!!!

  4. Love all these wonderful Shrimp recipes. Thanks Kalyn.

  5. Thanks for all the great recipes. Shrimp will be part of my Superbowl celebration and noe I have lots of recipes to choose from!

  6. My mouth is watering now! My husband, 4 kids and I all LOVE shrimp, so these recipes will keep us happy and healthy for months! Thank you!!

  7. Shrimp is always a treat. What a fabulous round-up of choice recipes! Even though it's chilly and rainy here in Santa Monica, that shrimp salad with cucumber, mint and cumin is calling to me.

  8. From what I've seen everyone is trying to have a healthy Superbowl, I don't understand what is wrong with beer and hotwings, it is kind of a tradition I would think. Shrimp would make an excellent side plate though.

  9. As always, Kalyn, terrific recipes! My husband and I are big shrimp lovers and he's especially excited about your first recipe in this post. He just bought some fresh mint and suspect we'll be making it soon. We pay absolutely no attention to football, but we too can appreciate a good Superbowl party!

  10. What a unique blend of flavors -- I'm definitely adding this to my list of recipes to try, thank you!

I saw you're attending BlogHer Food '10 - me too! Hope to see you there!

  11. I love shrimp and the best part is that it's low-cal! I want to try some of these now.

I'll probably make something baked and fattening for the party I'm going to. It's a friend of a friend's party so I don't know what main dishes they'll already have or what they like.

  12. It's true, I'm really looking forward to that cucumber salad, and the avocado salad sounds terrific too.

  13. What a great collection of shrimp recipes!

  14. Gorgeous colours in those photos Kalyn. We call these prawns here and can buy them off the boats each morning when they return from the night fishing.

  15. I'm glad people enjoyed the superbowl shrimp ideas, and I'm guessing a lot of shrimp-eating Saints fans are celebrating today!

I have to say that Barbara's life of buying the prawns right off the boat sounds pretty good to me!
