Recipe for Spicy Dipping Sauce with Sriracha for Sweet Potato Fries or Roasted Vegetables

Spicy Dipping Sauce for Sweet Potato FriesI remember how delighted I was when I discovered Sweet Potato Fries, and the recipe on the blog for Spicy Sweet Potato Fries has been a favorite of mine for quite a while now. I still love to make sweet potato fries that way, tossed in a mixture of spices, but recently I started to make plain sweet potato fries and put the spiciness in the dipping sauce. Sometimes I will even eat this dipping sauce on (gasp) frozen sweet potato fries like the ones in these photos, although there's no doubt that from-scratch sweet potato fries are more South Beach Diet friendly. Whether you make your own fries, or use frozen ones, this dip with spicy Sriracha is a fun way to eat them.

Mix together the mayo and sour cream until no lumps appear. I used light sour cream and regular mayo, but I think light mayo would be fine in this too. I'm not a fan of fat-free sour cream or fat-free mayo because they often have added sugar.

Whisk in Sriracha sauce, starting with a tiny amount and then tasting until it's as spicy as you prefer. I used about 1/2 tsp. Sriracha sauce, but I'm kind of a lightweight when it comes to spicy foods. Other types of hot sauce could be used, but I love the Sriracha flavor in this.

Then whisk in the fresh-squeezed lime juice, and blend until it's creamy with no lumps. That's all! Serve with sweet potato fries and wait for compliments.

Spicy Dipping Sauce with Sriracha Sauce for Sweet Potato Fries or Roasted Vegetables

(Makes just over 1/2 cup dipping sauce, enough for a big cookie sheet of sweet potato fries. Recipe created by Kalyn with inspiration from Spicy Mexican Slaw.

1/4 cup sour cream (I used light sour cream)
1/4 cup mayo (I used regular mayo, but next time I would probably use light mayo)
Sriracha sauce to taste (about 1/2 - 1 tsp.)
2 T fresh-squeezed lime juice

Sweet Potato Fries for serving (I would probably just roast the sweet potatoes with olive oil, salt, and pepper if I was eating them with this dipping sauce.)

Whisk together sour cream and mayo, stirring until there are no lumps. Then add Sriracha sauce, starting with a small amount, stirring to combine, and tasting until it is as spicy as you'd like it. I used about 1/2 tsp. but if you like spicy foods you'll probably want a bit more.

When the sauce is as spicy as you'd like, add the fresh-squeezed lime juice and whisk in until the mixture is smooth. Serve dipping sauce with sweet potatoes fries. I think this would also be good with other roasted vegetables, especially Roasted Cauliflower or Roasted Broccoli.

South Beach Suggestions:
Sweet potato fries with a moderate amount of this dipping sauce would be approved for phase 2 or 3 of the South Beach Diet, especially if you make your own sweet potato fries and use light sour cream and light mayo. If you use low-glycemic vegetables like Roasted Cauliflower or Roasted Broccoli, this could be eaten for phase one.

More to Chew On:

  1. I have a big bottle or sriracha sauce in my pantry. I am definitely going to try this recipe. Those sweet potato fries look fabulous.

  2. Have you tried it with plain whole-milk yogurt? It seems like that might be great.

    Thanks for the idea.

  3. Dara, I've really gotten hooked on Sriracha!

I'm loving SueBob's idea of using plain yogurt in this. If anyone tries it that way, let us know how you like it. (This is why the internet is so great!)

  4. I wish I could reach in and grab those fries. I would eat every single one. They look soooo good!

  5. I was also going to suggest subbing Greek yogurt for the sour cream. It's thick and tangy, higher in protein than sour cream.

  6. I use sriracha sauce in everything. Thanks for one more idea!

  7. Oh yes! I'm completely addicted to sriracha. And I could all too easily become addicted to sweet potato fries. I love sriracha mixed with Greek yogurt, lime and a bit of soy sauce.

  8. Looks fabulous... sorry I haven't been around for awhile, I moved to the US Virgin Islands (I still giggle when I say that) for six months, and it is taking awhile to get settled. But i do think I am caught up, and will be back with new postings...

Come take a look at my new blogs of Island life!

And I am needing all the sauce recipes I can find. The prices here are incredible. SOur cream is $3 a container, and dips are all over $5 ... saving these

  9. That sauce sounds wonderful and the fries look absolutely fantastic. I love Sriracha!

  10. YUM! This looks great! I love sweet potato fries. And I love mayo dipping sauces. And spice! You just made my day!

  11. Thanks for having this blog! I'm new to SBD, today being my first day on the diet, and have approximately 70 lbs. to lose. I'm excited about finding your blog and will be visiting a lot to use your recipes!

  12. try adding some thai sweet chili sauce (a la faux bang-bang shrimp from bonefish). it's delish!

  13. Sounds like a lovely combo! I love spicy & sweet.

  14. Hi Kalyn. I love Sriracha Sauce and sweet potatoes. Thanks for an awesome recipe.

  15. Gotta try this. I'm really learning to lie Sriachi sauce. Thanks for this recipe.

  16. I adore sriracha ... and sweet potato fries. I love the idea of using yogurt to make the dip too. Mmmm. Trying this soon!

  17. This looks yummy and is very timely - I have a bunch of sweet potatoes that I wasn't sure what to do with - having a sauce to "go with" will motivate me to roast them. Also that slaw recipe looks outstanding!

  18. Sweet potato fries and sriracha mayo... ahhh devine! You can also throw in some chopped green onions (and a bit extra sriracha) and eat with Cal rolls, use in spicy tuna, hamachi, lobster, etc. handrolls... They are heavenly. (I often skip sour cream, & just mix homemade mayo, sriracha & green onions.) They are great with steamed artichokes too!

I have lots of sweet potatoes... maybe I'll make the fries this weekend...

  19. I just did a sriracha fry sauce recipe. I used a little ketchup, mayo and mostly greek yogurt, but I love your South Beach one. The lime is a great idea. In the end, what doesn't taste good with sriracha sauce. I just used my recipe with gilled salmon today for lunch. I bet your version would also taste great on a turkey burger.

  20. Mmm, if you mix sriracha sauce with lots of other sauces, chances are it will be real tasty!

  21. I've been out all day today and have been moderating the comments from my iPhone, but just wanted to say that I LOVE all the suggestions for other ingredients or other uses for the sauce.

And nice to hear that I'm making a few converts for Sriracha too.

  22. I love, love LOVE sweet potatoes and sweet potato fries. That dipping sauce looks delicious.

The last time I made SP fries, I tossed them with oilive oil and cajun seasoning. That spicy seasoning contrasted with the sweetness of the fry and the lucious caramelization. It is my new go-to way to make them. Ad Emeril said- It really kicked it up a notch.

    Your dipping sauce does too!

  23. I've been amassing food blogs in my google reader for 2 years now and I just barely stumbled upon a local blog! So glad to see you out there! And this recipe looks delicious. :)

  24. Heather, welcome, and fun to hear from someone local.

  25. This looks amazing. I LOVE Sriracha. Never imagined you could use it for fries' dipping sauce though.

  26. I used equal parts sour cream, mayo & yogurt & it turned out nicely. A little too much lime for my taste but still very good!

  27. Yummy! Sweet potatoes and Sriracha. How scrumptious! Adding sweet potatoes to my grocery list today. :)

  28. This dip is YUMMY!!! I'm waiting on my sweet potato fries to finish cooking, but w/ this sauce I know they'll be fantastic. Thanks so much!!!

  29. I usually just mix light mayo and siracha, but yes, it's awesome with roasted cauliflower or Brussels sprouts as well.

  30. I think brussels sprouts is genuis; must try!
