Modern Products Issues a Recall on Spike Seasoning and Other Products

Since I'm a fan of Spike Seasoning and other products such as Vege-Sal made by the same company and some readers have bought them on my recommendation, when my store contacted me about a recall on these products I felt I should help spread the word. Modern Products is issuing a recall on certain batches of their products, although to date there have been no reports of illness and independent testing of the products has been negative. If you have Spike Seasoning, Vege-Sal, or other products made by Modern Products, click here to read the recall notice. That notice will give you the information you need to see whether the products you have are safe, as well as contact information if you have products that need to be replaced. (Thanks to Lisa from Homesick Texan for forwarding me the FDA link.)

We're Spike fans, too, so I checked our package. Unfortunately, the top of the package is missing so I don't know the date/lot numbers but we've been using this one container for months with no issue so I think it's okay. Thanks for this information, though!

I did order a six-pack from Amazon a few months ago and it is recalled. The number is stamped toward the bottom of the jar. Called the company and they are shipping 6 new jars and providing a shipping label to return the ones I have.

I started using Spike on your recommendation, but I'm pretty sure I'm safe.

I got to say I'm not in love with Spike. But I'm totally in love with Vegesal!

Such actions by companies are commendable. If they notice anything wrong with their products, it is a mark of responsibility for them to initiate the recall before the State asks them to. Modern Products deserve a pat at the back. Myself I have not read any adverse notice on their products, though.

Wow, how do you find the code and lot number from bulk when it is emptied into containers at the store. This is me... hoping they keep track of that information. I bought bulk weeks' (can't remember exactly) ago!

Lynne, I think Modern Products has been pretty pro-active about contacting stores where the batches in question were sold (I was contacted by the store originally.) I would go to the store and ask them.

Can Mrs. Dash be substituted for Spike's?

Kalyn said...

I've never used Mrs. Dash, but I don't think it's that similar to Spike. Having said that, in most of the recipes where I use Spike Seasoning you can probably use any type of seasoning mix that you like the flavor of.

I thought Mrs. Dash was similar. What ingredients are in Spike?

Kalyn said...

If you follow the first link in this post for Spike Seasoning, that earlier post lists the ingredients in Spike.

Kalyn-
Have you tried Penzy's Mural of Flavor? It's a blend similar to Spike (no salt).

Kalyn said...

CJ, have not tried it, but I have to admit I'm pretty hooked on Spike!

I don't care if other people use Spike or not, but don't leave comments here lecturing me about my food choices. I won't be publishing them. And for the record, I know some people are senstive to MSG, but it has been proven that MSG is safe for most people.
