Kalyn's Kitchen Picks: Ian's 100% Whole Wheat Panko Breadcrumbs

Ian's 100% Whole Wheat Panko BreadcrumbsI was walking through Whole Foods in Salt Lake City with my sister Sandee when I spotted these 100 % whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs, and I may have possibly let out a little squeal before I grabbed them off the shelf. If you've ever searched for 100% whole wheat breadcrumbs, you know how hard they are to find. Of course, you can make your own breadcrumbs from 100% Whole Wheat bread, but these are Panko breadcrumbs, which have a crisper, flakier texture than traditional breadcrumbs. I'm not sure if this is a new product, because I used to buy 100% whole wheat bread crumbs made by this company (but not Panko); then a few years ago they disappeared from the shelves, and even though I asked the store to order them, I never found them again.

(Edit: by request I'm adding this information: Ian's 100 % whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs contain unbleached whole wheat flour, malt extract, yeast, and sea salt. They contain .5 grams fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 23 mg sodium, 14 gr carbs, 2 gr fiber, .5 grams sugar and 3 gr protein in 1/4 cup.)

These 100% whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs are an ingredient I'm thrilled to have in my freezer, and definitely something I'd recommend as one of Kalyn's Kitchen Picks, where I talk about kitchen products and ingredients I love. Here are some ideas for things I might make with my newly-found 100% whole wheat Panko crumbs.

Full Disclosure about Kalyn's Kitchen Picks:
I bought these 100% whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs myself, and Ian's doesn't know I am writing about them and has not compensated me in any way for this post. (Everything featured on Kalyn's Kitchen Picks is a product I've tried myself and loved. Nearly all of these are products I've purchased myself; some are things I've used for many years. If I ever feature a product I received as a sample, I will always disclose that information, and you can be sure I won't be writing about anything unless it's something I would have happily purchased myself.)

  1. I didn't know these came in Whole Wheat! I found the regular white ones awhile ago and I have used them in cooking. They were great but now that I know there is a Wheat version I want to try them!

  2. I wish I had those, used plain white ones instead on a zucchini tian--adjusted from Williams Sonoma demo a few weeks ago.

  3. These breadcrumbs look great! Do you keep them in the freezer? Dumb question, but do you need to defrost before using or do you just take them out and use them?

  4. I do keep these in the freezer, although I've seen people who say not to (my freezer is frost-free so it doesn't seem to accumulate much moisture.) They defrost in minutes, so no need to worry about it, just use in recipe.

  5. I am so excited to see these! Panko breadcrumbs have a wonderful texture, but it has always bothered me that they weren't whole wheat. It's time for a trip to Whole Foods.

  10. I am so jealous - we have no Whole Foods nearby. Must try these . . . maybe I can order them online?

  14. These look great to have on hand! I made my own breadcrumbs last week and mixed them up with some ground Kamut Khorasan Wheat dry cereal flakes and they were fabulous! I just love to make homemade chicken nuggets :)
