Five Fun Things on Friday (6-18-10)

It's Friday, the weather is finally warming up in Salt Lake, and I'm sure you want to know where to find the recipe for these drool-worthy popsicles from Pinch My Salt, so let's get started talking about fun things I've spotted around the web this week!

Fun Thing #1: Lemon Buttermilk Popsicles from Pinch My Salt (via Whipped)
I love buttermilk and I love lemon, so when I saw the Lemon Buttermilk Popsicles that Nicole made at Pinch My Salt, I immediately was hooked. Nicole spotted the recipe for Easy Creamy Lemon Dream Popsicles on Whipped. I don't have popsicle molds, so I'm trying to figure out what to freeze them in, but I'll be making a low-sugar version of these soon!

Fun Thing #2: 56 Things to Remember from Gluten Free Goddess
Karina at Gluten Free Goddess writes the way I wish I could, and her latest post 56 Things to Remember is a must read. (It's also her birthday, so go read the post and send some birthday love.)

Fun Thing #3: Kalyn's Kitchen Featured on Saveur.com
There are a lot of places around the web that feature food blog recipes, but no one does it with more style and fairness to bloggers than the folks at Saveur.com. I've had a few recipes featured at Saveur in the past, and this week they featured my Lemon Rice with Red Pepper and Pine Nuts. Thanks Saveur!

Fun Thing #4: The Science Behind the Perils of Sugar via Christine Cooks
I've been trying to avoid sugar for quite a few years now, since I know I just feel better when I don't eat it, but now my friend Christine at Christine Cooks has found a video that explains why sugar is bad for us. Read about Sugar: The Great American Downfall at Christine's blog, where you'll find a link to the video.

Fun Thing #5: Weekend Menu Planning Archives at BlogHer.com

Since 2006 I've been writing about food for BlogHer.com, and the last few years I've been writing a feature called Weekend Menu Planning. Every Thursday I pick one ingredient or dish, share some photos and recipes from food bloggers, and encourage people to add it to their menu for the following week. This week I'm talking about Homemade Biscuits, but I've been writing these posts for a few years now, and the great people at BlogHer have decided to create a Weekend Menu Planning Archives category to help people (and me!) find the posts more easily. The archives is still a work in progress, but check it out if you'd like to see what I've been talking about all these years!

Now it's time to get this weekend started! Tomorrow I'll be having a big Father's Day Barbecue with some of my siblings, nieces, nephews, and assorted kids, where we'll be honoring the great fathers in our family, including my 84 year-old Dad, who is without a doubt The World's Greatest Father. Happy Father's Day to all the readers who are dads; hope you'll have a lot of good food on your special day.

By the way, if you've found anything interesting around the web this week, let us know about it in the comments.    If you need just a little more Friday Fun, you can use the label for Five Fun Things on Friday to see fun things I've shared on other Fridays!

I'm really enjoying your blog. I came to find out how to freeze basil. I only have a handful of basil given to me by my daughter in love. Would I still use the same process?

How would I subscribe through Blogger? I don't see an option at the top of the page and couldn't find it anywhere else.

Maria, thanks!

LOLM, yes freezing basil would be the same for any amount.

My blog has an old classic Blogger template so I can't add the "follow this blog" code, but so I don't know how you can follow through Blogger, but you can subscribe by e-mail or rss (in the right sidebar) or follow the blog updates on Facebook at the Kalyn's Kitchen Facebook page. Hope one of those options will work for you.

These look amazing. My Mom would gobble them up! I am going to make them with splenda.

Fantastically fun Friday! Loving the pops. I made/posted buttermilk thyme ice cream for the restaurant during our dessert testing phase and it got squashed. I thought it was a silly decision/mistake because it was DELISH! Now, I am going to try these pops.

Congrats on the Saveur feature Kalyn!

They look so good! Have you made them with stevia or another artificial sweetener?

A big congratulations for another fine recipe on Saveur. And a big, big thank you for linking to my baaaad sugar post. I've got to make those buttermilk lemon popsicles which sound wonderful beyond measure. And I read Karina's 56 things to remember and laughed a lot. Great Friday round-up! Have a wonderful weekend.

Life just isn't fair sometimes! Kalyn's wonderful low glycemic blog has an ad for Pop Tarts off to the side! Just not right!!

Kalyn said...

Anonymous, I've been chuckling over those pop-tart ads too. Sometimes I debate about blocking some of the ads, but I can count on one hand the number of people who have ever mentioned an ad, so hopefully people realize I'm not personally using those products!

Kalyn, if the ads help you in any way, then I am all for them! We all probably know by now that Pop Tarts aren't going to be on our plates, unless they make whole wheat, sweetened with Splenda or agave and high in fiber! Keep up the great work; your recipes and optimistic outlook are the reasons I keep coming back...and recommending your blog to lots of friends. Thanks, Andrea
