Five Fun Things on Friday (9-10-10)

Stuffed ZucchiniI've been so busy sharing garden photos on Fridays for the last few months that it seems like forever since I've posted a list of five fun things, so some of these mentions are long overdue. Don't let that stop you from enjoying them though, starting with one of my favorite spots on the web who gave some recognition to my list of zucchini recipes more than a month ago!

Fun Thing #1: My Zucchini Post Makes Top Ten Links List at Cheap Healthy Good
One of the blogs I follow is Cheap Healthy Good, written by a bunch of sharp young women. Ever Friday they post an impressive list of Top Ten Links, gathered from some of the most interesting sites on the web. I was so excited on August 8, when my post about Twenty Zucchini Recipes (for Sneak Some Zucchini on to Your Neighbor's Porch Day) made the list! Thanks to Cheap Healthy Good, and go check them out if you haven't discovered this blog.

Fun Thing #2: Roger Ebert Remembers Things Kids Liked in the 1950s
I realize that most of you reading my blog weren't kids in the 50s! But even those of you who are a bit younger than some of us might get a kick out of this pictorial from Roger Ebert (one of the most entertaining people on Twitter, in my opinion.) In the Chicago Sun Times, Ebert shares photos of things you'll remember if you were a kid in the 1950s. So tell the truth now, how many of them did you recognize?

Fun Thing #3: Food Bloggers' Ingredient Phobias Revealed at Canadian Living Magazine
I was thrilled to be included on a very stellar list of bloggers' sharing their ingredient phobias at Canadian Magazine, including a few bloggers I've met in person like Bea, Jasmine, and Matt, my best-long-distance-friend Ilva, and Salt Lake City blogging buddy Dara.

Fun Thing #4: You Could Have a Recipe Featured in Salt Lake Junior League Cookbook
I have Junior League cookbooks from various parts of the country, so when I got an e-mail telling me that the Junior League of Salt Lake is working on their fourth cookbook and would like recipe submissions, I agreed to pass on the information. (Wouldn't it be fun if a recipe from one of my blogging friends or readers makes it into the cookbook!) If you have a recipe you think might be good enough, there are three ways to submit:

--E-Mail: eat@jlsc.org
--Fax: (801) 328-1048
--Mail: New Cookbook, Junior League of Salt Lake City, 526 E. 300 S., SLC, UT 84102

Deadline to submit recipes is September 30, after which all recipes will be tested to see if they will be chosen for the book.

Fun Thing #5: How to Make a Parchment Circle
I confess that I had a few flashbacks of teaching first grade when I saw this video from Michael Ruhlman about How to Make a Parchment Paper Circle, but if you don't know this trick I think you'll find it to be pretty clever!

I'm sure some of you are spending more time than I do scouring the web for the latest and greatest, so if you found something fun this past week, please do share that link in the comments!    If you need just a little more Friday Fun, you can use the label for Five Fun Things on Friday to see fun things I've shared on other Fridays!

  1. I'm a kid from the '50's. The items show the cultural difference between America and Australia. I only know 7 of the items.Interesting.

Congrats on making the Top 10 links for your zucchini.

  4. How fun! I was born in 58 so I'm sort of kid from the 50s! We had that Christmas tree, complete with the revolving light.

  5. You find the such great things on the web, Kalyn. I follow Ebert on Twitter, too, and he is very interesting. I remember way too many of those 50's things.

  6. Barbara, very interesting. I'm kind of surprised that so few made it over there.

    Sandi, me too!

Barbara, thanks. It was a keeper for me.

    Pam, that's funny!

    Elaine, me too!

  7. Kid of the 50's here too. I remember all but two of those things. I even started singing some of the commercials that went with the products. Too funny!

  8. Great list of fun things, Kalyn! Congratulations on the link to your zucchini post and the blurb in Canadian Living (fun to be in there with you, my blogging inspiration). That parchment circle method is brilliant - I will never trace again!

  9. Jan, I'm just so glad I'm not the only one who remembers those things from the 50s!

Dara, too fun that we were both included in the Canadian Living feature, and glad you liked the circle.

Thanks for joining the conversation! I love hearing from readers and even though I can't always reply to every comment, I will always answer specific questions on a recipe as soon as possible.

Comments don't appear on the blog until they're approved by me, so no need to try again if you don't see it! Feel free make your signature a link to your site if you're a blogger, but links posted within the body of the comment will never be published.
