Kalyn's Kitchen Picks: Uncle Ben's Brown Rice

Uncle Ben's Brown RiceEvery so often I add to my list of Kalyn's Kitchen Picks, the blog feature where I talk about products I use myself that I'd happily buy over and over again. This week I realized I'm long overdue in giving an official pick to my very favorite brown rice, Uncle Ben's Brown Rice. Brown rice has always been considered a healthful food, but last year the FDA added brown rice to the list of foods that can officially categorized as whole grains. I've always liked brown rice, and Uncle Ben's uses long-grain brown rice which separates nicely into grains when it's cooked and is never sticky or clumpy. This is the brown rice for people who think they only like white rice!


Brown rice can go bad rather quickly compared to white rice, and I buy the big bags of Uncle Ben's Brown Rice, so I keep the rice in a plastic jar in the freezer. (I cut the label off the bag and tape it to the jar, because I'm into labeling things like that!)

I use my beloved Zojirushi Rice Cooker to cook my rice, but if this ultra-deluxe rice cooker isn't in your budget, any type of rice cooker will do. I've also had good results just cooking the rice according to package directions.

I've been buying Uncle Ben's white and brown rice for years, and they have no idea I'm writing this post about their rice.   2. I love them too. I don't know what my mom used, but I did hear somewhere that Julia Child was a fan of Uncle Ben's.

Trader Joe's has cooked brown rice in their freezer section, all you have to do is microwave the bag for 3 minutes and it's always delicious, plus it comes with two small bags, each one enough for two servings. They even have an organic brown option. Course not everyone has a TJ's around them but it's a great easy option if you don't have 45 minutes to an hour to cook rice!

  4. Megancake, we don't have TJ in Utah. Uncle Ben's has a similar microwaveable brown rice, that I've heard good things about, but I buy the long-cooking kind.

  7. I love the little microwave pouches of Uncle Ben's rice. They make 2 servings in 90 seconds.

  8. Carol, I have heard good things about them, and I like that they are all brown rice (not "instant" rice.) I make my own microwavable rice by cooking a lot in the rice cooker and then freezing the cooked rice in microwavable bowls!

  9. I'm a big fan of Uncle Ben's brown rice but never thought of cooking brown rice in the rice cooker. What is the water ratio to brown rice in the rice cooker? I need more directions--thanks!

  10. I'm afraid I can't answer that because my rice cook has little marks for how much water you put per measuring cup of rice, so I just go by that. Check the package and I bet it will tell you.

  11. My package of rice did not have this information, but a faq on the Uncle Ben's site did! Here's a link:

    It's under the topic "Are there alternative cooking methods for Uncle Ben's Whole Grain BROWN rice" (or something close to that). Nice tips though, worth a look. It also gives instructions for baking the rice and cooking it in a slow cooker.
