Friday Night Photos: Vinto Restaurant in Salt Lake City

Basil Gelato with Tomato SorbettoThis week I got an e-mail informing me that Vinto was celebrating the end of summer with a special Basil Gelato and Tomato Sorbetto with Sea Salt and Extra-Virgin Olive Oil. If you love fresh tomatoes and basil like I do, you can imagine how that description made my tastebuds wake up! The special ended on Thursday, but luckily I was having lunch with my brother Rand and friend Bonnie that day, and we loved Vinto's special end-of-summer dessert creation. All three of us are normally not dessert eaters, so we just got one to share, but we certainly savored every bite.

We started our Vinto lunch with this appetizer of Grilled Artichokes with Shallot Vinaigrette, something that I bet I'll order every time I eat there from now on.

Rand wanted to try the Piadine, described on the menu as warm, unleavened bread wrapped around savory fillings, so we split the Grilled Chicken Piadine for another appetizer. As soon as it came I knew this would be hard to photograph, but it was delicious.

Bonnie and I both went with Caesar Salad and we were virtuous enough to skip the croutons, but we couldn't pass up at least trying the crisp savory breadsticks.

Rand had Vinto's special pizza which had spicy Italian sausage, fresh Utah corn, and cherry tomatoes. This was just as good as it sounds.

We were having fun taking photos of lunch, so here's a close-up of the pizza.

And just one more bite of the wonderful Basil Gelato and Tomato Sorbetto.

I've also eaten at Vinto a few times with my friend Margarethe, and I've enjoyed it every time I've been there. I enjoyed Vinto's Chopped Italiano Salad so much that it inspired my Baby Arugula Chopped Salad with Chicken, Fresh Mozzarella, and Tomatoes.

It all looks totally delicious, Kalyn. Clicked over from FB when I saw the ice cream photo on flavor since I recently made tomato rosemary mint ice cream. It was quite good so I'm sure this was fabulous. I've had lemon basil gelato before and loved it, too. :-) Sounds like a great Friday night! Enjoy your weekend. :-)

We love Vinto. I love their pizza with Yukon gold potatoes, fontina, and arugala. Glad you had a nice lunch. I will save room for dessert next time!

Ah, a savory gelato! That sounds amazing. I was watching a chef do a demo last week of ice cream with blue cheese and creme frache. She said that some people find these ice creams odd, but she just considers them a "frozen sauce." I thought that was right on.

TW, I love that analogy. The Basil Gelato was sweeter than I had imagined it would be, but the Tomato Sorbetto was more savory.
