Low-Glycemic Holiday Recipes for a South Beach Diet Thanksgiving 2010

It's a shock to realize this is the fifth year I've put together a list of South Beach Diet friendly Thanksgiving recipe ideas. I understand how holiday meals can be a challenge for dieters, and I'm here to help! I do feel like it's okay to indulge a bit during the holidays, but if you don't want to completely blow your diet, or have health issues where you need to follow a low glycemic eating plan, these recipes will insure that you still have tasty choices for holiday dinners.  All the new recipes from this month will get added to my master list of South Beach Diet friendly Thanksgiving Recipes.  Meanwhile, let's get started with recipes I've posted throughout 2010 that might make good options for your Thanksgiving table.

Low-Glycemic Appetizer Ideas for Thanksgiving 2010

You couldn't ask for a more elegant holiday appetizer than this Roasted Asparagus Wrapped in Ham, and it's going to be a lot more healthful than the usual dips (with chips!) or spreads (with bread!)

You might be able to find fresh figs at Thanksgiving in some places, and if you can these Roasted Figs with Goat Cheese and Balsamic-Agave Glaze would make a beautiful appetizer.

Low-Glycemic Salad Ideas for Thanksgiving 2010

This Green Apple, Celery, and Walnut Salad with Lemon-Mustard Vinaigrette would be lovely with a few dried cranberries added for a Thanksgiving salad.

In a feta-cheese-loving family like mine, this Peperoncini Chopped Salad with Romaine, Red Bell Pepper, and Feta would be a Thanksgiving hit.

I could eat arugula every day, so I'd also love to see this Arugula Chickpea Salad with Feta and Balsamic-Tahini Vinaigrette on the Thanksgiving table.

Any type of green salad with creamy Green Goddess Dressing is something I'm betting would bring back memories for some Thanksgiving guests.

Val's Sweet Cabbage Slaw with Green Onion and Parsley seems like something that would be a nice change from the usual Thanksgiving salad options.

Low-Glycemic Vegetable Ideas for Thanksgiving 2010

For a vegetable option that's light but ultra delicious, consider these Lemony Green Beans for one of your Thanksgiving vegetables. They're also easy and quick to make.

Another option for green beans is these Braised Green Beans with Garlic, Tomatoes, Olives, and Capers. These could be made early in the day and kept warm in a slow cooker.

I have at least one beautiful Greek friend that I know would love this Roasted Cauliflower with Kalamata Olive and Garlic Vinaigrette for Thanksgiving. (Hi Mary!)

This one may not make it with kids, but if you're cooking for adults who like their greens Melting Tuscan Kale is delicious and easy to cook on the busy day. You could make this ahead and keep it warm for hours in a slow cooker if you wanted.

Cabbage is a bit unusual as a Thanksgiving vegetable, but I've been making this Roasted Cabbage with Lemon over and over since I found the recipe, and this would be perfect to share the oven with rolls.

This Roasted Broccoli with Garlic officially became a Recipe Favorite in 2010, and it would be a healthful and tasty Thanksgiving choice.

Higher-Glycemic Vegetables or Side Dish Ideas for Thanksgiving 2010

Baked Artichokes Au Gratin with Green Onions, Parmesan, and Romano would be a great side dish for Thanksgiving.

These 100% Whole Wheat Stuffing "Muffins" insure that every serving of stuffing is crispy on the top and bottom, and they help with portion control too.

I loved these Twice-Baked Sweet Potato Cups with Sour Cream, Chipotle, and Lime if you'd like a touch of spiciness with your Thanksgiving dinner.

These Apricot-Glazed Carrots with Ginger and Curry can be made with or without cilantro. Using olive oil and sugar-free apricot preserves makes this a perfect recipe for South Beach Dieters.

These Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Mushrooms with Thyme and Parsley were so good, I ate about half of them as a snack when I tested the recipe!

In the summer I ate it as a room-temperature salad, but this Grilled Sweet Potato Salad with Green Onion, Basil, Thyme, and Feta would also make a great sweet potato side dish. Use a stove-top grill pan to cook the sweet potatoes if there's snow outside where you live!

These Maple Glazed Roasted Carrots taste decadently sweet, but I use maple-flavored agave nectar or sugar-free maple syrup to keep the glycemic index lower.

Low-Glycemie Dessert Ideas for Thanksgiving 2010

These Low-Sugar Spiced Pumpkin Mini-Cheesecakes can really help with portion control for a holiday dessert. (I also highly recommend Low-Sugar Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake from 2009.)

Leftover Turkey Ideas for Thanksgiving 2010

This Coconut-Lime Turkey (or Chicken) and Rice Soup was a new idea for leftover turkey.  (You also can't go wrong with anything on this list of Top Ten Recipe Ideas for Using Leftover Turkey.)

    What camera do you use for your food photography? The photos are just perfect! (I guess the photographer probably has something to do with it as well.) :}

  5. Amy, thanks so much for that nice feedback. My earliest photos were shot with a little point-and-shoot Panasonic camera. Then in late 2006 I got a Canon Rebel XS. In 2009 I upgraded again and am currently shooting with a Canon 40D. I have a few different lenses, but most of the step-by-step photos are with a 50mm 1.4 lens, and the finished shots are mostly a 60mm Macro lens.
