Kalyn's Kitchen Picks: 100% Whole Wheat Orzo Pasta

I'm crazy over whole wheat orzo, which I think is perfect for pasta salads!

Are you familiar with orzo?  It's a very small pasta shape that resembles grains of rice.   Orzo is often used in pilafs or soups, and it's popular in Greece or other Mediterranean countries.  I've been an orzo fan for many years, but when I became committed to low-glycemic eating I gave it up because I had only seen white flour orzo.  Then last summer I spotted a recipe for whole wheat orzo and after searching a little I found it in Whole Foods.   So far I've only posted two recipes using whole wheat orzo, but I'm so excited about it that I'm officially making it one of my Kalyn's Kitchen Picks, which are products I spotlight because I'd happily buy them over and over.

The first whole wheat orzo I found was this Delalla Organic Whole Wheat Orzo from Italy.  I used it in a fantastic Whole Wheat Orzo Salad with Tomatoes, Kalamata Olives, Feta, and Herb Vinaigrette.

When I went to buy it again, I couldn't find the Delallo Whole Wheat Orzo at Whole Foods new store in Salt Lake, so I bought this Rice Select Whole Wheat Orzo.  I used that to make an equally tasty Whole Wheat Orzo and Grilled Vegetable Salad with Feta, Olives, and Herbs

I was happy with both the varieties of whole wheat orzo I tried.  If you can't find it where you live, you can get RiceSelect Orzo Whole Wheat Pasta or Delallo Orzo Whole Wheat Pasta from Amazon.com. I have just started using whole wheat pasta. Some took a while to acquire the taste for. But now I am a convert. Will give this a try soon. Thanks for all the info

I buy the Rice Select often. It's great. I'm happy anywhere I can substitute whole wheat options for those with regular flour, and fortunately, there are now many options when it comes to pasta.

Dave, I don't think the whole wheat taste is very pronounced in this, so I bet you'll like it.

I've tried Delalla's whole wheat orzo and loved it - the whole wheat pastas available are so much better than when they first came out, making it so much easier to substitute for regular pasta without any fuss from my kids. Once in a while, they find the package and comment, "Oh, it's whole wheat pasta - that healthy stuff." I just give a smirk, and they continue on, "you can't even tell."

I recently discovered whole wheat orzo at an Italian market in Providence, and I've been making salads galore. Thanks for planting the seed; I probably wouldn't have looked for it if you hadn't written about it a while ago. I don't find the taste to be overly "whole wheaty", and it's a great substitute in most of my orzo dishes.

Do you do anything different with whole wheat pasta? The last I made was really chewy and dry.

Just cook according to package directions. I'd definitely say that not all whole wheat pastas are created equal but I loved both of these and also love Garofalo Whole Wheat Spaghetti.

Kalyn, just wanted to say thank you for your website. It is awesome. I just started on SBD and initiated on phase 2, I had a baby 7 months ago and have been beastfeeding so I can't really start on Phase 1. Your website has made it so much easier. Your website is so awesome that i have cooked things that my husband has loved and doesn't even know they are healthy. You are awesome!!

My 17 year old son was just diagnosed with an allergy disorder, and rice was on the list of foods to avoid. I have been using whole wheat orzo in stead of rice. He loves the taste, and doesn't even know that I made the switch. It is healthy and delicious!

Thanks so much for the tip. I didn't know orzo comes in whole wheat. I am trying to add more whole grains to my diet, so I will look for this. I will be able to make my favorite orzo recipe again-- orzo, spinach, lemon zest and Parmesan.

This sounds so good. I am trying to include more kale in my diet. I do not know if I buy curly kale or not. I buy it in a bunch at walmart. It is not labeled but it is curly looking. Do you think it is curly kale or should I cok it a little. I am new to eating kale. Thanks for your help.
