Ten Favorite Deliciously Healthy Sweet Potato Recipes that are Perfect for Thanksgiving

Ten of my favorite healthy sweet potato recipes, just in time for Thanksgiving!

Healthy sweet potato recipes for Thanksgiving
Healthy sweet potato recipes for Thanksgiving!  Just say NO to brown sugar and mini-marshmallows.

For many, many years I was one of those people who would wrinkle their nose up at the mere mention of sweet potatoes (or yams as they are often mistakenly called.)  I didn't think I'd ever like them, but then I tried Spicy Sweet Potato Fries and had a sweet potato epiphany.  I realized that what I didn't like was those overly-sweet dishes with sweet potatoes, brown sugar, and mini-marshallows,  the ones that so many people serve for Thanksgiving.  Since then I've experimented with different ways to prepare sweet potatoes sans marshmallows.  A few years ago I picked six favorite sweet potato recipes, and now I'm updating this post with four more.  That's a total of Ten Favorite Deliciously Healthy Sweet Potato Recipes to recommend for your Thanksgiving table.  Even if you're one of the people who like those marshmallow-topped holiday sweet potato dishes, I bet some of my favorite recipes for sweet potatoes for might be things you'd like to add to your sweet potato options.

(All my healthy Thanksgiving ideas get added to the index page for Thanksgiving Recipes. Check it out if you're looking for more healthy options for holiday meals.)  To get any of the recipes in this post, just click the recipe title under the photo; enjoy!

My latest sweet potatoes creation combines two of my favorite flavors; loved these Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Red Onions with Feta.

Sweet potato fans will probably enjoy Sweet Potato Hummus with Olive Oil and Sumac for an appetizer.

My friend Bonnie loves this recipe for Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Red Onions, Rosemary, and Parmesan. I made this with white-fleshed sweet potatoes, but you could use orange ones if you prefer.

Another great idea for roasted sweet potatoes is Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Mushrooms with Thyme and Parsley.

If you've ever had a Chinese stir-fry dish with sweet potatoes you can understand the appeal of these Soy-Glazed Sweet Potatoes with Sesame Seeds.

If you live somewhere that still has warm weather, you might enjoy this Grilled Sweet Potato Salad with Green Onion, Basil, Thyme, and Feta.

I'd love these Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes with Feta and Sumac for Thanksgiving!

If you're preparing the entire meal for Thanksgiving you may like the appeal of these easy and tasty Spicy CrockPot Sweet Potatoes, cooked entirely in the slow cooker!

They aren't traditional for Thanksgiving, but I'd never turn down Spicy Sweet Potato Fries!

And last, but certainly not least is these Twice-Baked Sweet Potato Cups with Sour Cream, Chipotle, and Lime. I loved these when I made them for Thanksgiving.

I hope these six examples of sweet potato recipes that aren't loaded with sugar help you think outside the box a little for these tasty vegetables.   Do you have a good idea for cooking sweet potatoes that's also diet-friendly?  If so, let us know about it in the comments.

I wouldn't know where to start. They all look so delicious. If I had to pick one, it would be the one with the red onions!

Kalyn, I enjoy visiting your blog! I love your recipes. I have tried so many of them and they are always delicious. The breakfast casseroles are a staple at my house. Thank you!

I definitely prefer the savory sweet potatoes to the sweet. And since I'm the cook in the family, everyone else is learning to love savory, too!

I am in the same camp with you on the sickly sweet sweet potato recipes. I can handle them diced and then cooked in a covered dish in the oven with butter, salt and cinnamon but NO SUGAR PLEASE! My absolute favorite savory sweet potato recipe is a gratin with winter greens on top of the sweet potatoes. Its my new favorite Thanksgiving dish. And then I always love sweet potato black bean burritos made with the leftover Thanksgiving turkey meat too.

Thanks everyone for the nice thoughts about my sweet potato ideas. And I love the idea of sweet potato gratin with winter greens from Elizabeth. I'm gone away for the weekend visiting my sister's family but just thought I'd check in.

I did not appreciate sweet potatoes until a few years ago, probably because the ones I remember from growing up were the syrupy ones that came in a can, but now I do love them simply baked as well as baked sweet potato fries. Your soy glazed sweet potatoes with sesame seeds look especially good.

You always have a way to make me NOT miss the sugar! One question: I have never cooked with sumac. Where do I find it?

Yum I love sweet potato and we eat it a lot. ALWAYS savoury! I just don't understand why so many people add sugar! ICK!

I often roast cubes of sweet potato and keep them in the fridge to add to salads - a favourite is with rocket/arugula, steamed green beans, a few pine nuts and some blue cheese. And maybe a bit of grilled proscuitto. Or even just a basic salad with green leaves, tomato, avocado, red onion and maybe a bit of fetta.
