Kalyn's Top Ten Favorite Thanksgiving Recipes for 2011 (and ten honorable mentions!)

These 100% Whole Wheat Stuffing "Muffins" are definitely on my list of favorite Thanksgiving recipes!

In case there's anyone in the U.S. who hasn't noticed, Thanksgiving is now less than a week away!  I love Thanksgiving, both the idea of giving thanks for our lives of abundance and also the wonderful food that's enjoyed on that day.  For the last six Novembers I've been testing Thanksgiving recipes; then posting the ones that make the cut and adding them to my index page for Low-Glycemic Thanksgiving Recipes.  My standards are extremely high about what shows up on the blog, so that index page has a lot of very delicious recipe ideas for Thanksgiving.  When I decided to make a list of all-time favorites for Thanksgiving 2011, it took me quite a while to narrow it down to just the list of favorites you see here.  (In fact, I originally intended to pick just ten favorites, but there were simply too many!)  If you're looking for something new for Thanksgiving this year, here are 20 of my best recipe ideas for Thanksgiving-worthy dishes that I'm sure you'll enjoy.

Let's not rush past the 100% Whole Wheat Stuffing "Muffins" pictured at the top of this post!   It took me a couple of tries to get these just right last Thanksgiving, and I adore the idea of stuffing cooked in muffin cups so every piece of stuffing is crisp on the outside!

I'd choose Broccoli Gratin with Swiss and Parmesan for Thanksgiving dinner (although some of my family members are still very fond of the Thanksgiving Broccoli with Cheese Sauce that I made for years with canned cheese soup!)

When I posted the recipe I described this Low-Sugar Pumpkin Cheesecake Pie as being a cross between cheesecake and pumpkin pie, and I'm going to be making it again this year.

There are several other very good recipes for brussels sprouts on the page with the Thanksgiving recipes, but my favorite is still this Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic, Parmesan, and Pine Nuts from 2007.

A new recipe in 2011 is my friend Trina's Low-Sugar Fresh Cranberry Salsa with Cilantro, Lime, and Jalapeno.  I've already made it twice, and I bet this becomes a "must have" Thanksgiving recipe for my family.

I am crazy about winter squash, and this Balsamic and Agave Glazed and Roasted Buttercup Squash is one of my long-time favorites.

I love every recipe for fresh green beans that's listed with the Thanksgiving recipes, but if I had to pick my favorite it would be these Lemony Green Beans, which have both lemon juice and lemon zest.

I never really liked pumpkin pie, but in 2006 I swooned over this Reduced-Sugar Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake, and I've been making it ever since.

I like all things sweet potato except the sweet marshmallow-topped ones that some people like so much, but these Twice-Baked Sweet Potato Cups with Sour Cream, Chipotle, and Lime really appeal to my savory tastebuds!

I'd eat some kind of green salad for every meal, but for Thanksgiving I love this Thanksgiving Spinach Salad with Dried Cranberries, Almonds, and Goat Cheese.

Ten More Honorable Mention Thanksgiving Favorites:

Spaghetti Squash and Chard Gratin

Steamed Green Beans and Carrots with Charmoula Sauce

Roasted Butternut Squash with Rosemary, Pecans, and Gorgonzola Cheese

South Beach Diet Friendly Stuffing with Whole Wheat Bread and Mushrooms

Double Berry Jello Salad

Green Apple, Celery, and Walnut Salad with Lemon-Mustard Vinaigrette

Low-Sugar Pumpkin and Apple Crumble

Kalyn's Favorite Baby Arugula Salad with Lemon, Parmesan, and Pine Nuts

Soy-Glazed Sweet Potatoes with Sesame Seeds

Barely-Blanched Broccoli Salad with Feta and Fried Almonds

Happy weekend everyone!  Since quite a few of these favorites are from previous Thanksgivings, if any readers have tried a recipe I'd love to hear in the comments about how you liked it.  And let us know what you're cooking for this year's Thanksgiving dinner as well!

They all look good, especially the squash.

Great selection of recipes -- I'm reconsidering my menu now and might have to make a swap or two with something from this list.

I would love to be invited to your house for Thanksgiving! Everything looks fabulous, such a nice spread.

Thanks Pam. I hate winter but I love winter squash!

Lydia, you must make the cranberry salsa!

Jeanette, would love to have you come; any time. (As if your family would let you leave at Thanksgiving, ha!)

They all look wonderful - makes me want to do Thanksgiving. Maybe I will, not the turkey, can't get those until Christmas, just the sides. They're the best part anyway. LOL

Katie, I do agree completely that the side dishes are the best part. Happy Thanksgiving even if you're not officially celebrating.

I am in love with...

Twice-Baked Sweet Potato Cups with Sour Cream, Chipotle, and Lime

They look beautiful, perfect size for a big dinner and just sound delicious! Hint: Would love to see that one added to your recipe file on eRecipecards!

What a wonderful roundup!

Hi Dave. Glad you like the round-up. I usually don't have time to go back and find photos to submit to eRecipecards, but since I just saved this photo for this the post, just submitted it!

Amazing round-up as usual, Kalyn! So many of those appeal to me! As much as I already have on my menu, I wish I could have more. Just have a bite of each thing, you know? One year we need to have a bloggers' Thanksgiving gathering. We could do it several days before or after Thanksiving or maybe mid-way between Thankgiving and Christmas. ;-) That might seem like too much, but we had our Thanksgiving luncheon at work this past week and I don't think anyone will mind having the real Thanksgiving meal--with many of the same dishes--on Thursday.

Shirley, I love the idea of having a bloggers' Thanksgiving get together! What a job organizing it, but it would sure be fun.

We don't do Thanksgiving here. Thankfully. I cannot imagine cooking and eating a Thanksgiving and a Christmas Feast so close together. I love the green bean recipe. And I'm going to try the stuffing in muffin pans. Great idea Kalyn.

Thanks Pam!

Barbara, hope you enjoy the stuffing "muffins." Not many people here (at least where I live) have a big Christmas feast, more likely a nice brunch of just a lunch buffet in the afternoon so it's not so bad.

I love the stuffing muffin cup ideas and all of your side dishes sounds amazing. Between you, Dara and I's blogs today we have a very delicious spread for a Thanksgiving table!

Kalyn said...

Becky I am making those stuffing muffins again this year. I was noticing all the good food on the Utah blogs; we should have our own Thanksgiving after party sometime and try each other's food!

Kalyn, I absolutely loved this whole post, but my two favorites are the stuffing in the muffin tin format, and the low sugar pumpkin cheesecake.

I rarely make desserts, and my husband doesn't care for cheesecake, BUT something tells me I should not care about either of these "issues' and try that recipe.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your loved ones!

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. I don't make or eat desserts all that often either, but there is just something about that pumpkin cheesecake that keeps me interested!
