Growing Green Onions, and Things I'm Thinking About (4-8-2014)

Growing green onions in water!
I was amazed at how quickly the green onions grew in water!

If you're following me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, you might have noticed the amazing results documented above in my experiment with growing green onions in water, but I still thought it would be fun to share the photos of how quickly they grew.  This really couldn't be easier, just cut off the root ends of the green onions (leaving enough to stick up above the jar or glass you're growing them in), fill with water and let them grow!  I replaced the water every 3-4 days.  

It's well documented that I'm a huge fan of green onions.   (You can enter "green onions" into the search bar to see all my recipe idea using them.) I'm on my second growth from this set of green onions, and they're growing well but not quite as vigorously as the first growth, but I'm thinking I can cut my purchase of green onions at least in half.  And I'll never run out of green onions again!

As a former teacher, I always knew that small gestures could make a huge difference in the life of a child, so I loved this essay from Jason F. Wright called Meet a Boy Named Roy Who Put an End to Bullying and Changed My Life.  This will probably make you cry!

And from a high school economics teacher, 100 Wise Words for Everyone.  My personal favorite is #83, how about you?

  1. It doesn't look like the roots are cut off the onions in the photo. Or did they already grow more roots out of the bulb?

  2. I didn't cut off the roots, I just cut off the root ends (with the roots on them.) And yes, the roots definitely grew a lot more in the water as well!

  3. I've been growing green onions, too, as well as celery, on my windowsill. Isn't it fun?

  6. I must be missing something here..... Are you just growing them for the tops? It looks like you are not eating the onion.

  8. Katie, you could eat the onion part, but it's the green part that grows and that's the part of the scallions I use the most.

  9. We started doing this last summer.it works so well and the kids love seeing them grow so much. We were able to get two regrows power bunch before the quality began to suffer.
