Kalyn's Kitchen Picks: Tru Roots Organic Quinoa from Costco (and 25 Healthy Recipes Using Quinoa)

Tru Roots Organic Quinoa from Costco
This 4-pound bag of quinoa is a real bargain at my Costco, and I've become a quinoa fan!

How do you feel about Quinoa?  First of all, it's pronounced keen-wah, just in case you're not that familiar with this little seed that's cooked like rice and eaten as a grain.  Quinoa has become increasingly popular over the last few years, partly because it's high in protein and gluten-free and partly because it's tasty and can be used in a variety of ways.

I confess, I was a little slow to embrace Quinoa, and it was only when my Costco started carrying this huge bag of True Roots Organic Quinoa and I suddenly had 4 pounds of quinoa in the freezer that I started experimenting with it regularly.  Since then I've come to love quinoa as a side dish or the base for a salad, and I've gone through several of these big bags since I first bought one.  When I bought another one recently (for $9.99; what a bargain!) I decided it was time to add this product to my list of Kalyn's Kitchen Picks, where I spotlight things I love and happily buy over and over.  If I've convinced you to try quinoa, or just to eat it more often, keep reading to see some of my personal favorite recipes using it, plus more quinoa recipes from my food blogging friends.

Hi Patrick, sorry to hear that! It's been a few months since I bought my latest bag; will have to check to see if it has gone up at my Costco.

I've noticed Costco is carrying some great organic grains including this quinoa. I have noticed the price has gone up a lot recently - wondering if that's due to demand.

Michael, I love the way Costco seems to keep up on food trends; my Costco now has a lot of gluten-free products. I am going there today and plan to check the price on this!

Hi Kalyn, this is the quinoa we've always bought, too. Like Patrick, I was really surprised at the price jump the last time I went to Costco. That being said, all of your quinoa recipes look fantastic...I really can't get enough of it.

Hi Dara,
I am starting to think I must have bought some right before the price went up! I do love it though, no matter what the price I'll probably keep buying it.

I always have quinoa in my pantry, and when I can find it, I love to include some of the red quinoa, too.

Kalyn Denny said...

Lydia, I haven't used the red quinoa too much, but I do love it.

For everyone who commented about the price, I was just at Costco and saw that this was $19.99. So now I'm wondering if I bought it before the price went up or just didn't look carefully and it was $19.99! I honestly don't know, but still love it no matter what the price.

My favourite is tabboulaeh with quinoa replacing the bulgar. It is good and really improves the nutritional profile of the salad.

Food Junkie, I love quinoa tabbouleh!

Is Quinoa a Phase 1 product? Thanks

Kalyn Denny said...

Squid, even though it's a seed and not a grain, SBD considers quinoa to be Phase 2.

I too have been buying the 4 lb bag of Tru Roots quinoa from Costco, but got some last week and the price has jumped to $18.99 here. It's important to keep it in the freezer as you said so it stays fresh

Patricia, I always freeze mine! I think your Costco has the lowest price anyone has mentioned.

Quinoa is a great substitute for eating gluten loaded rice or coscous. Your recipe for quinoa and black bean salad is amazing. I've made it 3 times in the last two weeks. I substituted garbanzo beans the last time I made it because I was out of black beans and it was equally wonderful. I love your recipes Kalyn!

Thanks Raeanne! So nice of you to say so; comments like that really make my day.
